The Gunners will face a familiar suggestion of having to spend should the current campaign end without silverware and after admitting his side needs some reinforcements, Wenger is now likely to dip into the transfer market.

And one man certainly in Arsenal’s sights is Maroune Chamakh.

The Moroccan striker has refused to renew his contract at Bordeaux and Arsenal have been heavily rumoured to have made an agreement with the player for a move to north London.

When asked of the latest on the Chamakh saga, Wenger remained tight-lipped but the manager could not deny a deal for the 26-year-old was likely.

“We will announce the deals after the league [finishes],” he said. “He is one of the players who has a good chance to join us.”

Arsene Wenger also added that the club is now ready to spend big in the transfer market and revealed the financial stress of moving to the Emirates Stadium is now over.

Thus, Arsenal may not be scared off by high price tags even though the club’s wage policy will remain the same.

“I think we can overcome [Chelsea],” he said. “For a while we were not investing maybe because we had built the stadium but I think our financial situation is now becoming much stronger and we will be capable to buy the players we need to buy.”

“No we cannot [compete] on wages with Chelsea. That is simple. I believe what is not normal is not our wage bill but their wage bill because that should not be allowed.

“However they cannot all go to Chelsea, it is as simple as that. There are top players outside of the ones Chelsea want to buy who are good enough for us.”
