Report: Arsenal 2-0 Marseille
A pair of fine goals from Jack Wilshere secured a 2-0 win over Marseille which kept Arsenal’s chances of qualifying for the round of 16 – even as group winners – in their own hands.
It took just 33 seconds for the tone to be set for the evening as Wilshere danced his way from the right flank to curl in a goal which put the hosts 1-0 ahead while some fans were still taking their seats.
As if the flood gates had been opened for a thrashing, the Gunners then went on to fluff their lines in front of goal after Wilshere’s strike, as a close-range miss by Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil’s saved penalty-kick – wrongly awarded for a foul outside the box – meant that Wenger’s men still had some work to do in killing off a one-sided affair at half-time.
But despite another laid-back effort from the Gunners after the break, Marseille could not help but concede again as Ozil teed up Wilshere to slot home the goal which ended the contest.
Arsenal remain in command of Group F, but after Dortmund’s 3-1 win over Napoli, all of the top three could either go through or be eliminated going into the final match day where Arsenal will have to at least avoid a defeat in Italy to secure a spot in the round of 16.
