Donyell Malen has been allowed to participate in training sessions with the Gunners’ senior squad this week.

The Dutch youngster was signed from Ajax in July after impressing Arsenal scouts before completing an impressive trial at London Colney.

Malen took part in the first team’s preparations ahead of the Champions League defeat to Olympiacos on Tuesday.

Incidentally, the 16-year-old played over 20 minutes as Arsenal’s Under-19s beat Olympiacos 3-2 in the Uefa Youth League on that same day.

Malen has been representing the Netherlands on youth level

After loaning out the likes of Chuba Akpom and Yaya Sanogo while Danny Welbeck remains sidelined, Wenger has made no secret of his intentions to dip into the academy squad for goal-scoring prospects.

The former Ajax boy, who was called upon again during Thursday’s training session, was Arsenal’s highest-rated youth acquisition of the summer.

“Donyell is a great talent. It is extremely unfortunate that he is leaving Ajax.” Ajax head of youth Wim Jonk said after Malen’s exit.

Traditionally, one or two youngsters are selected for first team training by the club’s coaching staff at some stage in every season.
