Arsene Wenger has refused to rule out the possibility of signing a new goalscorer before transfer deadline day.

The likes of Edinson Cavani, Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and even Watford’s Troy Deeney have all been linked to Arsenal with two weeks remaining in the January transfer window.

Despite the impressive form of senior striker Olivier Giroud, Wenger insists the odds of adding a new player to his attacking options could depend on the fitness of Danny Welbeck.

“Ideally, I personally would prefer to have the existing players back from injury, like Welbeck,” Wenger said on Friday

“I don’t think I would find a player on the market better than Welbeck.”

Arsenal find themselves in a similar situation from two years ago when they topped the Premier League for 128 days, more than any other title rival.

However, the Gunners only managed to finish in fourth place that season as Wenger was left to rue his decision to make Kim Kallstrom his solitary signing during the winter.
