Wenger: The player we changed our mind on
Naming Danny Welbeck in the Arsenal squad which welcomed Leicester City at the Emirates stadium was a late decision made on Saturday night according to Arsene Wenger.
After playing 45 minutes for the club’s U-21 side last Friday, Welbeck was not expected to feature for the first team until next weekend’s FA Cup clash with Hull City.
However, Wenger has revealed that the form of the fit-again striker in training forced him to suddenly change his mind ahead of Sunday morning.
“Yesterday [is when I decided to select him]. In the last two days he was convincing in training.” the Arsenal manager said
“I planned at the start, when I made my press conference on Friday morning, to play him next week. But in the last two training sessions he was very strong and I decided just in the end to include him in the squad.”
The surprise introduction of Welbeck paid off in fairy tale fashion as the 25-year-old grabbed the late winner after a resolute display from Claudio Ranieri’s league leaders.
“Yes, but it was a great decision because Danny Welbeck is a great player, and you never know in our job if somebody else had come on would he have scored or not.” Wenger added
“But everybody is extremely happy for him, because he has been out for 10 months, that is an eternity for a player.
“We work very hard, our medical team, our fitness team, to bring him back so strong. Let’s not forget he has not played one minute for us, he has just played 45 minutes in the under-21s.”
