‘He should be our captain, not Mertesacker!’ – Twitter reacts to Arsenal star’s show at Everton
One man appears to be winning back the faith of the fans after the past rough couple of weeks.
After his sending off against Tottenham Hotspur, Francis Coquelin’s status as a fans’ favourite began to be questioned for the first time since he broke into the first team last season.
Arsene Wenger appeared to be feeling the same way about the Frenchman as he dropped him from the starting line-up for Wednesday’s trip to Barcelona.
However, a typically combative and passionate performance at Goodison Park this weekend saw the midfielder win a few more praises as the Gunners secured an important 2-0 victory.
Coquelin capped his display by saluting the away fans with a message that the team had not given up on the title. That moment alone has seen the 24-year-old nominated for the Arsenal captaincy by some Gooners.
Both our captain and vice captain not in our starting XI this season again. We need a long term captain, Coquelin,Cech are best options.

We want an attitude and passion for the game in our captain. That's not Per, its Coquelin

Coquelin shows passion, hunger, commitment and determination. He reminds me of the invincibles and Martin keown

Francis Coquelin made 12 interceptions today more than any player in any Premier League game this season.

Make Coquelin captain cos he shouted 'we haven't bottled it YET'. Awful set of supporters we have

pretty sure the key to Coquelin being not awful today is that he was up against a bloke with literally a lower IQ than him

Coquelin making more interceptions than anyone since 2013/14 is largely down to Elneny… And Everton's poor decisions.
