Transfer to Arsenal was a “gamble” – Ex-Gunner speaks on £4.15m move
Former Gunner Nwankwo Kanu has revealed his transfer to Highbury would not have happened without the faith of Arsene Wenger.
Kanu’s career appeared to be at risk after going through serious treatment for a heart problem in 1999 yet he managed to secure a £4.15 million to Arsenal nonetheless.
The Nigerian went on to score 44 goals in 197 appearances, winning a Premier League title and the FA Cup before he left for West Bromwich Albion in 2004.
According to Kanu, who scored a memorable hat-trick against Chelsea in the 1999/2000 campaign, Arsenal’s surprise decision to sign him is why he is very fond of the club.
“It was like a gamble. People doubted whether I’ll make it but I proved them wrong and that’s why the club is special to me” Kanu said
“I treasure Arsenal most of all the clubs that I’ve played for in my career because after undergoing my operation, Wenger signed me”
