The cries for Arsene Wenger to go on a spending-spree this summer after a disappointing season has been echoed by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

Arsenal went into the second-half of the campaign sitting pretty at the top of table with fans and some pundits almost in no doubt that the title drought since 2004 could be brought to an end in May.

However, a severe dip in form has seen them concede the title to Leicester City who are now on the verge of becoming champions for the first time in their history .

With his side left to settle for a top four place for yet another season, former Gunner Merson has slammed Wenger for misleading his team after refusing to sign a single outfield player last summer.

“He [Wenger] is brainwashing the players,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “Santi Cazorla has been saying they’ve got a great mentality, how have they got a great mentality? They got beat by Swansea reserve team at home.

“Every team loses a game, but it’s the way they lose. It’s the same way they chase games. Someone has got to step in upstairs and stop making money, forget the money and go and sign someone.”
