Gunners bench Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has revealed the striker he is signing this summer “will not be someone just to make up the numbers”.

Following a season of disappointment which has seen the Gunners surrender the Premier League title to Leicester City, many have called for new signings to strengthen the squad more than ever.

Switzerland international Granit Xhaka remains on course to become Arsenal’s first acquisition this summer but the midfielder is unlikely to be the answer to any goal-scoring concerns after Danny Welbeck’s latest injury blow.

Thus, Wenger has admitted he will be out to add a new striker to his side. Despite rumours linking him with a move for young forwards, the Frenchman insists his next signing will have to be a proven goalscorer.

“We will have to try [to sign a striker],” he said. “It will not, ideally, be someone just to make up the numbers.

“When you buy you want to buy top strikers. There is an international shortage. We need to find the right person but we have targets and hopefully we can do that.”

Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain, PSG’s Edinson Cavani and Real Madrid star Karim Benzema are some of the players available.
