Wenger speaks on double deal for Ozil and Sanchez
Arsene Wenger has finally addressed the current uncertainty over a deal for two of his biggest star players.
The Gunners are set to begin the 2016/17 season with a low sense of optimism from fans after failure to secure the signing of Jamie Vardy or Gonzalo Higuain.
While Wenger has been charged with the task of strengthening his squad through new additions, another job for the Frenchman is to keep his star players Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez fully committed to the club.
The duo’s Arsenal contracts will expire in 2018 as rumours continue to suggest they are mulling over the club’s offer of an extension.
However, Wenger insists there is nothing to worry about when it comes to the future of Ozil and Sanchez.
“We keep that [contract negotiations] internally. We make progress always, but it is not always a quick process. They still have two years [on their] contract and there is no urgency as well.” he said
“At the moment we have priorities, and most of the time contract extensions are done outside the window because it gives you a bit more time to focus on that”
New contracts can take a while to negotiate and let’s hope that is the only reason for the delay here. However, it has to be said that previous experiences with Robin van Persie and Samir Nasri are proof that it is vital to extend a player’s contract while you can.
What is for sure is that our club needs to step up its ambition to perhaps ensure that star players do not have their heads turned by the Bayerns and Madrids.
