Arsenal 3-0 Chelsea – Report
For the first time in five years, Arsenal managed to defeat Chelsea in a Premier League clash through an emphatic display at the Emirates stadium on Saturday.
Much to the surprise of the public, Arsene Wenger named an unchanged starting line-up from last weekend’s away victory at Hull City as Alexis Sanchez continued in his new role as a centre-forward.
However, the Arsenal manager’s decision proved to be the right one for the second week in a row as the Gunners began today’s affair in the ascendancy.
Santi Cazorla’s long-range shot which was parried away by Courtois was Arsenal’s first warning sign for the blues but what followed was a pure gift from Antonio Conte’s men.
Cahill failed to fully control a pass from Ivanovic and a lurking Sanchez pounced onto the ball to chip it past the goalkeeper and put Arsenal ahead against Chelsea for once.
The first goal has often gone Jose Mourinho’s old team’s way in this fixture in recent years and the effect it had on Arsenal was similar to what the opener against Manchester United at home did last year.
Wenger’s men suddenly had their tails up and a second goal was theirs less than a minute later as Walcott guided the ball into the net after a cut-back from Bellerin.
The icing on the cake came on the stroke of half-time as Sanchez and Ozil combined very well for the German midfielder to volley the ball home.
Arsenal carved out several chances to extend their lead through counter-attacks in the second-half while Chelsea had their own opportunities to snatch a consolation goal.
But in truth, the game had already been decided in 45 memorable minutes.
