Ferdinand: I respect Alexis Sanchez
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has heaped praise on Arsenal’s in-form star Alex Sanchez.
The Chilean superstar appears to have rediscovered his best form this season after an injury-plagued campaign last term which still saw him finish with a total of 17 goals in all competitions.
Sanchez, who is playing in a new role as a centre-forward, scored his fifth goal of the season as Arsenal secured a rare 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Saturday.
After only eight games into the 2016/17 campaign, the 27-year-old is the Gunners’ top scorer and also leading the tally of assists with three so far.
The exploits of Sanchez since moving to London from Barcelona in 2014 has amazed Rio Ferdinand who believes the forward is proving to be one of Arsene Wenger’s best signings ever.
“It is impressive to see that Sanchez has scored 47 goals in his first 100 appearances for the club,” he told the London Evening Standard.
“There is no doubt that with a statistic like that, he has to be regarded as one of Wenger’s finest buys.”
However, Ferdinand insists the form of Sanchez should not be an excuse to leave out Olivier Giroud who is yet to make a start this season.
“That doesn’t mean Olivier Giroud doesn’t have a role to play.” the former England international added
“I think he can still score goals and make a big contribution to the squad but I see him as Arsenal’s plan B.
