‘He shouldn’t have started today’ – Twitter gives mixed reaction to Arsenal star’s performance
Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Southampton saw Laurent Koscielny receive most of the compliments for a brilliant performance and a brilliant goal on his birthday, but not all of his teammates were as impressive in the eyes of the fans.
Francis Coquelin, who replaced Granit Xhaka in the starting eleven, produced his usual show of passion after the winning goal in injury-time.
However, the performance of the French midfielder was not enough to please certain fans on Saturday even though others believed he was “excellent”.
With Arsene Wenger appearing to rotate his options between Xhaka, Elneny and Coquelin at the moment, the jury is still out on who should be starting regularly in the holding midfield role.
Coquelin was the latest to be judged by fans on Saturday and below were the mixed reactions from various Gooners about the shift the 25-year-old put in…
The further from the first team Coquelin is, the better Arsenal play. Reliable squad player but should not be starting games ahead of Xhaka

Coquelin is a great DM but his limitations as far as passing are always going to unbalance our midfield unfortunately.

Those calling for Xhaka today. Think bigger picture. He played in the international break, Coquelin was excellent, and we got three points.

When will Coquelin score? I know he's in the team to break up play etc but we don't have a 30 goal a season striker, we need a few from all.
