A club official has confirmed that Arsenal were in pursuit of one of the most coveted players in Europe at the moment.

After witnessing Danny Welbeck suffer a severe injury in May, Arsene Wenger was under more pressure than ever to add a new striker to his squad following the 2015/16 season.

The Gunners were constantly linked with a move for Gonzalo Higuain once again after a failed deal to secure the signing of Leicester City star Jamie Vardy.

However, the expected arrival of the former Real Madrid star at Arsenal never happened as he finalised a switch to Juventus in July.

Wenger has refused to admit that he formally made an approach for the Uraguayan star but the chairman of Napoli has revealed that Arsenal were in for the 28-year-old.

“We received a request from Arsenal,” De Laurentiis told the London Evening Standard.

“Personally I also received a request from Atletico Madrid but they didn’t put enough money on the table.”

“We were not ready to sell him – for me Higuain was not for sale,” he added.

“One year earlier I offered another five-year contract to Higuain and his brother [agent].”It was more money than what he is getting right now from Juventus.”
