Discussions over a deal which could see one of Arsenal’s first team players leave the club were apparently held in August.

Apart from securing the signings of Granit Xhaka, Rob Holding, Takuma Asano, Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi during the summer, Arsene Wenger managed to offload certain players as well.

One of those departures saw Serge Gnabry join Werder Bremen who appear to be interested in another Arsenal star.

According to Bremen’s general manager Frank Bauman, a move for Per Mertesacker, whose contract expires next summer, was discussed over a month ago.

“I could well imagine Per at Werder,” Baumann said to Bild.

“In the course of Serge’s transfer, we also spoke about his [Mertesacker’s] future,”

However, Mertesacker appears to be a target for more than one club in Germany after Hannover’s own admission that they are interested in the 32-year-old’s services.

“Everyone knows what Hannover means for Per,” said managing director Martin Bader this week.

“A transfer is still far away now and it seems like a crazy thing to even discuss it. But anything can happen in football.”
