A former Premier League star has heaped praise on Arsene Wenger’s side for their start to the 2016/17 season.

The Gunners are currently fourth in the Premier League, only a few points behind the leaders while a place in the first knock-out round of the Champions League has also been secured.

Despite putting together a run of 18 games unbeaten in all competitions, Wenger’s men have not escaped criticism after drawing back-to-back games in the league.

However, ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand insists last week’s late drama at Old Trafford showed the Arsenal bench has improved.

“I have said before that Olivier Giroud is a great Plan B and he showed that again with the equaliser at Old Trafford.” Ferdinand said

“But the man who provided the assist was also a substitute in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain — another quality player.

“You do need players who can come on and change a game. At United we had people outside the first XI who could do that — players like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Javier Hernandez.”
