Wenger on losing title to Liverpool this season
Arsene Wenger has given his thoughts on the current context of the title race after watching his team drop points this weekend.
Arsenal surrendered top spot on Sunday after failing to beat Tottenham Hotspur despite going into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead.
That was only the fourth time the Gunners have failed to secure all three points this season with the 4-3 defeat to Liverpool, the 0-0 draw at Leicester City and Middlesborough’s stalemate at the Emirates stadium the only previous occasions that Arsenal have not managed to win a league game this season.
With title rivals Liverpool securing a 6-1 victory over Watford to become the new league leaders, Jurgen Klopp’s side is now being brought up more often in conversations about this season’s title race.
Thus, Wenger has admitted the absence of European football may well be the difference maker for them.
“I don’t know [if they have the advantage now]. It’s a bit easier to prepare for the games because you do not have the intensity of a Champions League game, but if you ask them, both [Liverpool and Chelsea] would like to play in there so you cannot complain about that.” Wenger said on Sunday
“There’s a little physical advantage, for sure, when you play after the European weeks, but you have to live with that and I wouldn’t say that it is an excuse. Even if we are in front, it’s a small difference after 11 games – it’s very tight.”
