Arda Turan insists Arsenal were not at the level of clubs he wanted to join when he decided to leave Atletico Madrid last summer.
The Turkish star completed a move to Barcelona in a £27m deal, even though he had to wait several months to play for his new club due to a transfer embargo.
Turan, who was previously targeted by Arsenal after impressing at Euro 2008, has revealed he would have turned down the Gunners if he received an offer.
Speaking to Diara Aria, the 29-year-old claimed his best efforts at Atletico were to attract a club like Barcelona and not Arsene Wenger’s side.
“I felt that I would sign for Barca. Honestly, I thought: ‘If I play very well I’ll end up signing for Barca, because my style fits this team. If I play well [average], finish at Arsenal.’
“For my style, with ball, playing easy, short, aggressive when needed, but especially good, I knew I could get here in Barcelona.”
