Man. United player ‘almost agreed’ to join Arsenal

The agent of one of Manchester United’s new signings has revealed that the player could have ended up at a different club in England during the summer.

Following the departure of Tomas Rosicky as a free agent, Arsene Wenger was believed to be in the market for one more attacking midfielder to even up the options in his squad.

Former Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan was initially linked with an Arsenal switch as several sources confidently claimed that the Gunners were close to agreeing a €35 million deal to secure his services by the start of the new season.

However, only weeks after being reported to be on the verge of moving to the Emirates stadium, the 27-year-old’s transfer to Manchester United was confirmed.

While refusing to mention Arsenal’s name, Mkhitaryan’s agent Mino Raiola has obliquely revealed that the Armenian star could have joined United’s rivals had the Red Devils not acted quicker to finalise the deal.

“Mkhitaryan was more complicated. We had almost agreed with another Premier League club [believed to be Arsenal] but Dortmund wouldn’t let him go, then United pushed it over the line,” Raiola told the Daily Mail.

Raiola, a master football agent with several major players as his clients, recently questioned Wenger’s spending policy in another interview as he discussed Manchester United’s expensive deal for Paul Pogba.

“Arsenal have the money but do they have the balls?” said Raiola. “I respect Arsene Wenger. He has a philosophy that says these figures don’t match what I want to do, so that’s OK.”
