Jamie Carragher has revealed that seeing Mesut Ozil become his teammate was one wish he had during his playing days.

The German midfielder, a stand-out performer with 5 goals and 16 assists this season, has become a fans’ favourite at Arsenal after arriving from Real Madrid as a marquee signing in 2013.

According to Liverpool’s former vice-captain, the Gunners’ playmaker was a talent he spotted and wanted to see at Anfield years before his move to north London.

“I remember watching Ozil shine for Germany’s Under 21s in 2009 when they beat England 4-0 and said to Steven Gerrard at that time he was someone Liverpool had to go for,” Carragher said.

“He was at Werder Bremen then and he was an attainable target. He continued that big impression at the World Cup in South Africa 12 months later but, by that time, Real Madrid had made their move.”

Liverpool did not contest Arsenal in their pursuit of Ozil but the reds went head-to-head with the Gunners for the signing of Alexis Sanchez in 2014 as the ex-Barcelona star chose the Emirates stadium instead.
