‘Almunia will play tomorrow’
Arsene Wenger is not giving anything away on Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation but insists Manuel Almunia is still in the frame.
The Gunners’ goalkeeping department has come under much scrutiny after high-profile errors by Almunia and Fabianski proved costly last season.
Most fans have called for either one or both of the duo to be ditched, with Almunia being strongly linked to Osasuna while Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer is reportedly on the brink of a switch to north London.
Even so, the manager has kept faith in all his goalkeepers this preseason and according to Wenger, the rotation will see Almunia return in goal against Celtic on Sunday.
“Almunia will play tomorrow. Fabianski did well today, you can’t fault him for the goal and he did everything else well.”
And on the continued Mark Schwarzer rumours, Wenger stated:
“There are a lot of things I don’t master in football and the rumours are one of these things.”
Despite backing Fabianski, Wenger admitted that the Polish shot-stopper was slightly at fault in the soft set-piece goal Arsenal conceded on Saturday.
“The only thing is there wasn’t much command on the free kick [which led to the goal]. From the outside it looked as if no-one took charge of the organisation and that’s a little bit down to the goalkeeper. But overall he had a good game.”
