Ozil out, Walcott in: Wanted XI for Arsenal vs West Ham
Considering what was a relatively solid show on Monday, there is a temptation to retain Wojciech Szczesny in goal ahead of David Ospina. But with nothing really broken (yet) when it comes to Ospina, you cannot fix it.
Arsenal’s defence should feature the Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker pairing since that is the strongest option available.
Despite any sights there may be on Tuesday’s trip to Monaco, this is a vital game in Arsenal’s top four ambitions and therefore the idea of experimenting Calum Chambers at centre-back against West Ham should be ditched. And considering the Hammers’ threat in the air, picking Mertesacker makes more sense.
Nacho Monreal has now proven to be the stronger option at left-back and with him bound to start at Monaco, Kierran Gibbs should step in to give the Spaniard a bit of a breather.
Muscle will be needed in midfield and therefore Aaron Ramsey should be the man in there with Francis Coquelin. It means that one of Wenger’s play-making duo will have to be withdrawn. And since Mesut Ozil still has his injury demons to banish, the German should be the man rested tomorrow. That aside, it has to be said that the idea of Cazorla and Ozil together tends to cause an imbalance defensively.
Alexis Sanchez has been playing too many games of late and if Tomas Rosicky is fit, the Chilean should be given the day off tomorrow, playing a super-sub role if needed.
Danny Welbeck’s pace and direct intent will be needed against Monaco while Giroud’s aerial threat will be required against West Ham. Thus, the former should be rested for Tuesday while the latter is called upon on the Saturday.
