Wenger: Why I left him out of my team
Arsene Wenger has revealed he was forced to make a late decision to omit Mesut Ozil from the squad which traveled to Stoke City.
With 16 assists and five goals in all competitions this season, the German midfielder has been the star of Arsenal’s season so far, winning more plaudits than ever.
However, the Gunners had to do without Ozil’s services this weekend after news of his absence left fans surprised ahead of the Premier League showdown against Mark Hughes’ side.
Following the 0-0 draw with Stoke where the former Real Madrid star’s creativity was missed, Wenger admitted that the team had no option but to leave Ozil behind on Sunday after discovering his foot problem.
“He had an inflammation on his foot and yesterday morning we looked and he was not very well. He was not 100 per cent at Liverpool so I decided to leave him out.” the Arsenal boss said
The 27-year-old has made 26 appearances since the start of the season, making him one of the most used players in the Arsenal squad along with Petr Cech.
But according to Wenger, Ozil’s break might not last for too long as he targets a return against Chelsea.
“I think he should be back for next Sunday.” he added
