Per Mertesacker insists he has accepted Arsene Wenger’s decision to drop him to the bench over the last couple of weeks.

The German featured regularly at centre-back for much of this season as the Gunners mounted a title challenge.

However, Gabriel has been preferred to Per Mertesacker as Laurent Koscielny’s partner in recent weeks following a mid-season slump in form which has seen Arsenal fall 11 points behind league leaders Leicester City.

According to the 31-year-old who has lost his place in the first team along with Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud, there are no complaints to be made.

“Of course I am playing less, but I am sticking at it. ” Mertesacker said

“Maybe I will get another chance. Things change quickly nowadays.

“I listen closely to what the coach says and he knows that he can count on me, no matter what happens”
