Wenger: Why I removed him from the squad
Arsene Wenger has revealed the reason behind one of the omissions he decided to make when naming his squad earlier this week.
Arsenal returned from the trip to Bulgaria with a hard-fought victory after having to come back from two goals down to secure a 3-2 triumph over Ludogorets.
The affair at the Vasil Levski stadium saw Wenger make a few changes to his starting eleven as the unavailability of Hector Bellerin, Nacho Monreal and Theo Walcott saw Carl Jenkinson, Kieran Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey feature.
Monreal and Walcott, who missed last Saturday’s visit to Sunderland, were known to be struggling to stay fit and so their absence on Tuesday was relatively expected.
However, the omission Bellerin, who did not appear to have suffered an injury during the 4-1 win at the Stadium Light, is what was concerning for many.
According to Wenger, the decision to leave out the Spanish right-back was only a precautionary move to maintain his fitness.
“Hector has a test [before Tottenham game]. I left him behind because I was cautious with him.” the Arsenal manager told the club’s official website.
“We could have basically forced the issue, he could have played maybe in Bulgaria but he should be alright [for Sunday].”
