Wenger’s candid comments on Arsenal’s awful defending
Arsene Wenger has criticized the way Arsenal defended Everton’s crosses during the defeat at Goodison Park on Tuesday.
The Gunners succumbed to only their second loss in the Premier League this season as Ronald Koeman’s side capitalized on some slack defending to score twice from headers.
It all occurred in the absence of summer signing Shkodran Mustafi who has proven to be a key part of Arsenal’s back four for much of this season.
But according to Wenger, the Gunners could have dealt with Everton’s threat of aerial balls much better than they did.
“We did [lose control]. In football you have to defend well. We knew exactly what was happening and the first goal is exactly what we planned not to do.” the Arsenal manager said
“We have to look at ourselves tonight because we punished ourselves by not respecting completely the rules that we put out the night before we played.”
Nonetheless, Wenger insists his side will have to find a away to put the disinvestment at Everton behind them heading into the weekend’s clash with Manchester City.
“We have to recover. We play five games away from home out of six and we have a fantastic away record. We want to keep that strength and prepare well for the next one.” he added
