Chambers: Mertesacker treats me too hard
Calum Chambers has picked out Per Mertesacker as Arsenal’s leader in the dressing room.
The Englishman is settling into his second season in north London after arriving from Southampton last year.
Chambers has been paired up with all of Arsenal’s senior centre-back options – Gabriel, Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker – during his time at the club.
But while statistics suggest the 20-year-old has conceded the most goals when playing alongside Mertesacker (last season’s 3-2 defeat at Stoke City was their first game together), Chambers insists the German is the most discipline figure towards him off the pitch.
“He has a go at me sometimes, telling me to tidy up. Even if there is one litter in my locker, Per will come over.” Chambers said in an interview.
Mertesacker was named the club’s vice-captain following the exit of Thomas Vermaelen in the summer of 2014.
