BBC journalist Simon Stone has revealed another audacious move which Arsene Wenger made during the closing hours of the summer transfer window.
The Arsenal manager was linked with a move for at least one more new signing during the final days of last month after watching his side suffer consecutive defeats to Stoke City and Liverpool in the Premier League.
However, Wenger opted not to bring in any new faces with the likes of Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rather saying goodbye to the club on Thursday.
Even so, Arsenal’s defensive deficiencies meant the club was apparently in search of a new addition to improve a back-line which has conceded the second highest total of goals in the league this season.
And according to Simon Stone, the Gunners actually made a surprise offer to sign former Manchester United centre-back Jonny Evans which was turned down by Tony Pulis’ side.
“West Brom turned down offers of around £25m from both Leicester and Arsenal yesterday.” the BBC journalist said
Shkodran Mustafi, who only moved to the Emirates stadium a year ago, came close to completing a loan transfer to Inter Milan which would have left another void for Wenger to fill at centre-back.
