Arsenal decline £6m Spanish deal

Arsenal have declined a second bid from Athletic Bilbao for defender Nacho Monreal.

Monreal was a revelation in Arsene Wenger’s side last season, cementing his place ahead of Kieran Gibbs as the Gunners’ first choice left-back.

The Spaniard has only one year left on his current Arsenal contract as the club stalls on a new deal for him and Theo Walcott this summer.

However, Monreal is a wanted man in La Liga after Athletic Bilbao offered £6m for the fullback’s services – an improved offer from last month’s rejected deal.

According to local reports in Spain, the Gunners were open to a dialogue with Bilbao over Monreal’s fee but Arsene Wenger has requested that the Spaniard is made unavailable for sale.

When asked about his Arsenal future in June, Monreal suggested that he was eager to remain in north London.

“I have one more year on my contract and I would like to stay at Arsenal,” he told Sport360 at Arsenal Soccer School Dubai. “I am very lucky to play for Arsenal, and am very happy to play for Arsenal

“If the boss [Arsene Wenger] wants me to stay, I will do”

Monreal was involved in the entire match as Arsenal thrashed a Singapore XI 4-0 on Wednesday.

  1. Sign him up again, he was a real improver last season, with a good attitude. Well worth a new contract AW.
