Arsenal manager Unai Emery has confirmed the real reason why Mesut Ozil had to be removed from the squad which played against Manchester United on Wednesday night at Old Trafford.

The former Real Madrid star received all sorts of criticism last season for failing to deliver consistent performances as Arsenal finished outside of the top four of the Premier League.

Ozil has shown glimpses of his quality on a few occasions this season, helping the Gunners put together what is now a 20-game unbeaten run.

However, the 30-year-old has been left out of the team in the past couple of games, prompting rumours that he is not on good terms with Unai Emery.

The Arsenal manager was questioned about why he removed Ozil from his squad for the United game on Wednesday and Emery has revealed it was due to a fitness problem.

“He had backache and now he’s working with the physio. We are going to look at when he can come back with us.” the Arsenal boss said.

Ozil is currently the highest earner in the Arsenal squad after signing a new contract with the club almost a year ago.
