Fair point + Conceding late goals
I am probably the only one feeling like this but, unlike usual, I am in no anger nor grief over today’s result.
Why? For most of the match, I was watching in panic as Sunderland dominated, with the half-time possession stat reading a brutal 65% to 35% lead. Last time I witnessed that scenario was when Barcelona visited the Emirates.
We had made absolutely zero attempts to score and had it not been a goal so fortuitous, we may not witness anything similar for seasons, this game would have been delicately poised at 0-0 with the hosts the more likely to triumph (shades of last year’s corresponding fixture).
Therefore, it felt like a match we had lost, or would lose, but somehow we were 1-0 ahead. So Bent’s equalizer, while very late and bitter, felt inevitable.
I am also not feeling aggrieved about the result because it was a scarcely resolute defensive display from the team. Everyone at the back was nearly impeccable with Koscielny showing his best yet.
With the way we hardly ever responded to Sunderland’s pressure with any threatening of our own, they could have easily outscored us with better finishing and a more generous Arsenal defense.
We had been so solid at the back that Bent’s goal – with the last meaningful kick of the game – was the first time our defense had been cut open. It was the first time Almunia was neither catching with aplomb or watching the ball fly wide. It was also the first time Koscielny and company were scrambling for the ball instead of clearing with confidence.
I am rarely one of those stubbornly optimistic gooners, and unlike some, I am yet to predict whether we will contend/win the title or not because it is too early, but somehow, I felt today’s result was a point gained.
It could have been better, but boy was this a good result.
Since their return to the top flight in 2007, very rarely have Sunderland been dispatched at the Stadium of Light, and Roberto Mancini would have bitten your hand off for such a result three weeks ago. Like Craven Cottage, not many teams will escape without a run for their money there, trust me.
I had jitters once I realized after the Bolton game that Sunderland was up next in the Premier League. While we were playing Braga, I was thinking of Bruce’s men and I was telling someone only yesterday that a draw would be fine.
Also, on evidence of ESPN and BBC’s pre-match predictions of a draw, even the neutrals were aware this was no straight-forward task for us and perhaps an upset in the making if we failed to take an early advantage.
I know there are still those who are frustrated because of our lingering habit of conceding late goals. But even that is just a taste of our own medicine, considering how many points we have rescued over the years from strikes right at the death.
United at Fulham and Everton recently proved that no one is immune to late concessions. And as far as I can remember, even the much idolized ‘Invincibles’ were victims to some silly draws during that 2003/04 season.
Want proof?
Leicester 1-1 Arsenal (90 mins: Hignett comes off the bench to score a dramatic equaliser for Leicester)
Bolton 1-1 Arsenal (83 mins: Pedersen brilliantly equalises for Bolton)
Everton 1-1 Arsenal (75 mins: Radinski stretches to level for Everton)
It appears as though the tendency to concede late goals has been in the blood way before Wenger’s class of today.
That said, still unbeaten into September after visits to Anfield, Edwood Park and the Stadium of Light is hardly a frustrating return.

Where can i see full highlights of the match?
Motd BBC one lol
Rosicky/Walcott over Nasri anyday if all are fit. I don’t know what happened to Nasri, we need someone with pace on the wings.
Thank God am nt the only one grateful about the result. 60mins without cesc, down to ten men n stl had the luxury to squander a penalty at stadium of light?? The defence today was just perfect! (apart frm clichy on sum occassions)
i think we’re just about ready for the Bridge.
Kos + squillaci over verm??? only time will tell.
Same old Arsenal – throwing away points. Nothing ever changes, and more worrying people seem to be happy about it. Wenger has turned his fans into a bunch of losers.
grow up. stop with the cliches. find your own voice and support your team. same ole arsenal! ffs.
There is nothing to blame the players for. we can only be proud of their effort.
Perhaps people will point to Song’s second yellow, or why Clichy did not clear the ball properly at the end but I think it was bad luck on the day, and its hard to be critical of them. I was a bit gutted rocicky didn’t at least make the keeper work for the pen but plenty of players have missed pens, and he didn’t miss on purpose. So we just have to keep our heads up and be proud of the lads today.
where not a bunch of losers, we drew today if you didnt notice, our defence was brill, ref was “bit poor”, but its not a disaster as some people think, its not a loss we got a point and every point counts,
Excellent article from fair (not whining) Arsenal fan. Keep it up (y)
I have often said “Calls and luck” balance hemselves out over the season. Today the balance came in one game. A lucky goal and bad luck at the very end. Ref going over time and a clearance that was blocked. Cheer up Guys a point is a point and the season is young. With V P. Walcot Vermelian and Diaby bac`k better days are ahead. Lets hope that starts this week at the “Lane” and next week with WBA.
On another subject a younger cousin who came from Brit some time ago died – I was pleased and surprised at the funeral to see her boyfriend had put to RED and White Arsenal scarves drappingthe Altar! Thats loyalty people!!!!!!!!
Taking the first half on it’s own I would obviously agree but considering we controlled the game with 10men for the last 30mins I’m seething that we dropped 2points. The penalty miss ultimately cost us the game although had Clichy not panicked at the end it wouldn’t have.
Good article.
im actually happy with the result
facts 10 men
no fab
missed penelty
sunderlkand with position
and we still got a draw awsum
haha

wat u guys think
Great article.
The only frustration was that an impeccable defense display from the centre backs was not rewarded with 3 points.
Injuries cost us the points. With Diaby and Walcott providing power and pace on the counter attack Sunderland would have been buried witin the hour.
To extend your argument, the Invincibles also got pushed around in the cups. So I am not even concerned about Tuesday. Whatever happens happens.
Make Eboue captain on Tuesday and walk out with a 3 – 1 win.
“Make Eboue captain on TuesdaY”
Amen.
hard to believe but honestly, Sunderland deserved something from the game. our deffence was phenomenon. the two centre backs were extra ordinary.
Lets PLEASE have TV at Left-Back.He played there with Ajax.
Back 4 of Sagna,Kos,Squ,TV -looks solid.
I have said it before and will say it again. Clichy makes fine interceptions and his pace is of good use, but he often appears too naive or nervous.
Just watch him when he has the ball in our area and someone closes him down. He starts to panic and look like he doesn’t know whether to pass or clear.
Fair assessment even if the disappointment still lingers. Kosi was awesome today he’s a very committed aware player and he doesn’t panic. If we are honest our passing wasn’t up to scratch and we didn’t use chamack as a targetman enough.
Bullshit we threw it away, after defending like that all game. What moron gave Rosicky the penalty, after every shot he’s had for a year went into the stands? I knew he wouldn’t score it soon as he stepped up, but hoped I was wrong. Chamack should have taken it, he’s meant to be a striker isn’t he?”
Fair analysis, fair result. We playin a draw @ d stadium of light wit 2 of our best players of d field & 1 man down away 4rm home is a gud result.
agree with the last comment by adam i was nervous wen rosicky was takin pen new he was gunner sky it an he did should ov been left 2 chamack.
Nasri is not a winger as soon as Fabregas came off n Rosicky came in, when Nasri moved to the centre he played better than he did in the 1st half.
Koscienly and Squillaci played very well, it was just a lil mistake in the end that cost us

Was pleased to see the note that “the INVICIBLES made thre or four last minute draws . So there is hope. Let us all be positve think strong thots for our team – better days sre in the very near future, As the old METS baeball player said “YOU GOTTA BELIEVE” and they did win the World Series. “YOU GOTTA BELIVE”
ha, it’s funny how we look at games like this when its us on the other end. Remember a few years back when Cesc scored at the last second? Ehhh what are you going to do, it’s unfortunate but it’s a point.
Am I the only one that things there should be a starting 11 away and at home? Well not completely changed but certain players play and can handle the road better than others.
I don’t think Jacky is ready to play on the road yet. I think AA can’t handle the road either. Kills me to say but I think that Denilson should have played instead of Jacky and Eboue instead of AA.
Oh well, one point..not bad…lets move onto CC and whoop the piss out of the spuds.
Can’t wait to see the young guy whoop up on the 1st team of the spuds.
