Alex Song will make his first ever World Cup appearance today.

The 22-year-old was surprisingly demoted to the bench by Cameroon’s coach on Monday as Japan claimed a shock 1-0 victory over the ‘Indomitable Lions’.

And before Paul Le Guen gave Matip the nod ahead of Song in a three-man midfield, the Cameroon coach explained his decision that:

“Alexandre Song may not start the first match against Japan. This does not mean there is anything bad about him. He is one of our great players. It’s just that I want to start the tournament with the most competitive team possible.”

With the plan to omit Song backfiring on Monday, Paul Le Guen has restored Arsenal’s key man in the Cameroon starting eleven which will face a Danish side led by Nicklas Bendtner today.
