Today’s topic is:
How do you feel about Shay Given joining Villa instead?

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given on a five-year deal and will unveil their new player on Tuesday.
Given is without a doubt a man who had been coveted by most Arsenal fans who have seen the club pay the price for shot-stopping blunders in recent seasons so it may come as a surprise that the Irish goalkeeper was indeed available for sale at Man. City but was just not pursued by Arsene Wenger.
Give your opinions: Is the promise of Szczesny and/or Fabianski enough to disregard Given or is this an opportunity missed?
Not bothered as we were never after him
A year on the bench is a killer for a pro goal keeper.
Just had to click on the link to your blog to answer your question as follows…”I could not give a flying fuck”.
We couldn’t buy him. Scez is our No.1 and quite right too. He’s proved himself and will be fantastic this season. He did everything last season without Vermaelen in front of him, this season the two of them will cut our goals conceded in half.
big blow should hav signed him need experience in that area, wat a shame
Of little interest. Even when he was being linked, Given isnt the type of keeper we need. he is a great shot stopper, but hardly commands his area.
Szczesny is our number one and has all the attributes to be truly world class and is about 15 years younger than the irishman.
Not bothered, and strange you’d even bring this up?
Great reply – should have read all the comments before posting my very similar reply
Great shot stopper and very brave but useless with crosses unless protected by a couple of good centre halfs …which we dont have.
he is a short, goal line hogging keeper, with a cronic arem injury, glad we did not sign him, he would not have aided us in any way. Ask yourself why man u and arsenal never went or him, despite both needing keeper over the last ten years, both scouted him and declined bidding for him.
Given is a fantastic shot stopper, but has nothing else of note, and would not help fix our set piece problems in any way, in fact I’d think he would have added to them
At that price we should have snapped him up. Great competition for Szcz
should have bought him from Newcastle……..
But not needed now!
Szczcesny’s the man!!
Was a very good keeper but we had no chance of signing him.
Man City are far too wealthy to allow any of their rivals to prosper from any transfers.
Another form of the type of financial doping that’s ruining the sport IMO.
Not bthered really a couple of seasons ago I would have been gutted untiI sthe shoulder injury which apparently can occur again at anytime, schezzer deserves his chance and maybe we have found in him our van der sar ofr hte next 10 15 years, lets streghen in front of him, I love the idea of kos and the verminator together Djourou is the real worry sagna is the bests right back in the country in mho, a Cb and a Dm and maybe a high quality striker could it be walcott, and we are sorted.
exactly the wrong type of keeper for us. we need someone who can command his area and who will come and claim crosses. two thing that Given is terrible at.
Who cares…he’s gone to Villa why do some Arsenal fans spend their entire lives whingeing over what might have been….I think the answer is they never suffered bad years and I don’t mean our recent troiphy drought but watvching really ordinary teams under really ordinary managers finishing in the bottom half of the table…U=I have three guys who sit behind me acting like aa ‘bench’ who make me wonder what has happened to ur great club.. Given? Who gives a toss….
He was on a 100K per week contract at Citeh. Only Cesc thanks to his extra 20k per week captain’s allowance earns more than him. And according to reports, he is on a “Multi-Million” contract with Villa. So he was naturally priced out.
Yep, thats the first thing that came to my mind when I came across this news.
Szczesny will do nicely. We don’t need Given.
he is never an oh have opportunity missed.i so much have confidence in szczeny
Yes we do not really need him, lets hope arsene will sign a good defender.
it was good decison by wenger, by not signing shay given because since upper last season that abou diaby has broke his back he has not play any competitive game, and also wojechy szcecheny as number 1 and lukas fabiansky number 2 is ok for our great team.
Unfussed. I’m happy with our set of 3 (Chez, Fav, Vito), and the kid Martinez is apparently all the rage too – that should be interesting.
Given’s shoulders have gone and he’s always been a good shot stopper (as was Almunia most of the time). Given is just as bad as Almunia when dealing with crosses.
“Joel Campbell could have played for the Republic of Ireland as his grandfather was an ex-Irish missionary priest Fr. Noel Campbell from Roscommon, Ireland.”
Big opportunity missed. Given is a class act and would have been great to have on board for the young keepers to learn from.
citeh had to pay him more money to keep him on the bench for a year
maybe he was born to be number 1 and everyone else on the bench
that kind of arrogance is not needed at arsenal fc
Not really bovered. He’s been warming Citeh’s bench for a season and if we really wanted him would have moved by now. Keeper isn’t the problem it was now that Chez is established. Given is a good keeper and should be playing in the premiership, but he does have a dodgy shoulder which lets him down regularly.
