ESPN pundit and former Liverpool star Steve Nicol is expecting Arsenal to complete a move for one of Manchester United’s out-of-favour players.
The Gunners have been linked with the addition of a host of players this summer following the team’s failure to put together a serious title challenge last season.
Even so, with the likes of Per Mertesacker, Gabriel, Calum Chambers and Rob Holding still on Arsenal’s books, a new centre-back might not be on Arsene Wenger’s wish list.
However, Nicol insists the Gunners are in need of another defender and Manchester United’s Chris Smalling is likely to be the man who is brought in.
“If I am an Arsenal fan, I’d be asking, are we a place for Manchester United’s cast offs?” he said
“Let’s be honest, that’s not to be harsh on Smalling and Welbeck, it’s just a fact.
“I see this happening because Arsenal need centre-halves. They have injury problems. I think Smalling will end up at Arsenal.”
