Keown on Arsenal’s formation against Chelsea
Martin Keown has provided what he believes will be the Arsenal set-up for the FA Cup final against Chelsea.
The former Arsenal defender was part of the squad which defeated the Blues 2-0 at this stage of the competition over a decade ago.
The Gunners are heading into this year’s cup final with serious worries at centre-back where Gabriel and Shkodran Mustafi will join Laurent Koscielny on the sidelines.
However, Keown is expecting Wenger to go with a 3-4-3 formation once again despite the overwhelming shortage of options.
“Laurent Koscielny is banned, Gabriel is injured and Shkodran Mustafi is a major doubt but despite the shortage of centre backs I expect Wenger to stick with a back three on Saturday evening,” he wrote in the Daily Mail
“The formation has inspired their strong end to the season, winning eight of their last nine matches, so I see little point in changing things.
“With full backs as wingers, Arsenal have been a much better attacking force as Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez have been allowed to come in off the lines and wreak havoc through the middle.”
According to Keown, it would take quite an effort for Arsenal to secure their third FA Cup triumph in four seasons on Saturday.
“For Arsenal to beat Chelsea, Wenger needs Ozil to be totally committed both with and without the ball and Sanchez to be firing on all cylinders.” he added
“Even then it will be an uphill struggle for Arsenal. Chelsea are much more settled with this system and will be the fresher team having played 10 fewer games.”
