Koscielny set for bow on Sunday
Laurent Koscielny will be handed his competitive debut as an Arsenal player on Sunday.The Gunners’ most costly summer signing has been given the nod to pair up with Thomas Vermaelen at the heart of Arsenal’s back-line against Liverpool.
The 24-year-old had a mixed pre-season for his new club – stuttering on some occasions but impressive in the Emirates Cup.
At Anfield, Koscielny might not have the most straightforward of debuts, but the former Lorient defender has been preferred to Johan Djourou for Sunday’s big kick-off.
“I have spoken to Laurent and he will discover the Premier League on Sunday,” said Wenger.
“You can talk and talk but at the end of the day the players show what they can do on the pitch and he will have an opportunity to do that.”
No shit Djourou is injured, couldn’t be trusted with 90 mins anyways. So we take an untested player to guard our defense against Liverpool. I really hope it works.

I would take Given over Schwarzer, but will Manchester City want to “strengthen” a rival?
And Bellamy…anyone? He can be a real nut-head but when he chooses to play, he can be a real genius.
He seems to be a bargain at the moment for the rest of the Prem to take a look at, but City’s ‘no strengthening a rival’ policy might see them sell him to Fulham.

I take Schwarzer over Given for The Arsenal. Given is a better shot stopper but he doesn’t come for crosses so well, and that is what we need because every team in the world thinks they can beat us in the air in the box. But its a mental exercise anyway because Citeh won’t give to any top table rival. Bellamy? Please. Do not pass go, do not collect 200…
Anyone who even counts Djourou as a CB for us this year is a fool. The guy has averaged 8 games for us per season since signing. In truth we need 2 new CBs if we want to compete in all competitions. But, as much as I love the Boss, we’ll be lucky to get one CB… and then, mark my words, when we break down physically, he’ll talk about how we’re injured and short in the back. Bring in 2 CBs (and obviously a new GK) and give us a real shot at going the distance.
I knew someone would come up with that point about needing a set-piece commander. If so, at least Given (while being a Cech-like shot stopper) does not flap on set pieces and if you had watched Schwarzer in the WC, you would know he won’t be our messiah on corners.
And Djourou not to be counted as a centre-back? What is he then? A ball boy? So you’re suggesting we squander spaces on the 25-man squad list with a dozen centre-backs just because we are paranoid? Yes, we need another CB, but no more than one!
And if you think Bellamy is not a talent worthy of playing for us, you probably only watched Arsenal matches last season. Even so, didn’t you see him score against us at City at least? And don’t even mention his wages because the boy loves to play so much that he said he’s willing to take a pay cut – even if he is to play for hometown club Cardiff City. Just because City over-pay their players does not mean all of them are money grabbers.
I admit Bellamy’s attitude is only second to Barton, but like RVP, he can be real class when fully fit, humble and focused.
