Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard has reacted to the news of Mikel Arteta being on the brink of becoming Arsene Wenger’s replacement this summer.

A month before the season came to an end last Sunday, the Gunners announced that Arsene Wenger would be stepping down from his role as Arsenal boss.

The Gunners have actively been looking for a new man to replace the French tactician with several names being linked with an Emirates stadium switch.

Mikel Arteta appears to be the man leading the race to become Arsenal’s new manager with rumours claiming that he will officially be appointed by next week.

“I welcome the news Mikel Arteta is the favourite to become the new manager at Arsenal,” Lampard told BT Sport.

“It is always encouraging to see a club give a young, up-and-coming coach a chance and Arteta has got what it takes to do a fine job.

“Some will question his experience but he knows Arsenal very well from his time there as a player, while he is an intelligent man with a huge interest in tactics. He has worked under Pep Guardiola as his assistant for the last two years and that cannot be underestimated. He will have learnt so much.”
