Jamie Carragher has argued Mesut Ozil’s impressive tally of assists this season will mean nothing if Arsenal fail to lift the Premier League title in May.
The German has been regarded as Arsenal’s best performer so far this term, racking up a total of 16 assists which which threatens to beat the all-time record of 20 set by Thierry Henry.
However, former Liverpool captain Carragher insists that Arsene Wenger’s men will have to secure a major trophy for Ozil’s exploits to be recognized.
“His numbers are remarkable. He’s on target to become a record breaker but if there is no silverware, what will it mean?”
“Do you remember Thierry Henry for the goals and the trophies or the fact he set the record for most assists (20) in 2002-03?”
The Gunners have secured back-to-back FA Cup triumphs since the arrival of Ozil in 2013, but critics have challenged to Arsenal to clinch their first league title since 2004.
