One of Arsenal’s most promising players has suffered the first major set-back of his fledgling career.

Several stars on the Gunners’ books have been hit by severe injury blows in recent years, damaging the club’s challenge for major honours.

And the latest man to suffer that fate is Stephy Mavididi. The 18-year-old, who has been the youth team’s top scorer over the past two seasons, was sent out on loan to Charlton Athletic last month.

However, Mavididi’s season has been brought to an early end following a serious injury he suffered over the weekend in the 1-0 loss against Bury.

According to Charlton boss Karl Robinson, the bright youngster was broken down by the news of his four-month injury lay-off.

“He saw a specialist last night and he’s set for an operation at the start of next week, but it will keep him out for between 14-16 weeks,” the manager told the Charlton website.

“He’s been in tears which is sickening because he’s been tremendous for us and we wish him all the best.

“He’a been a credit to his family and to Arsenal FC and we’d love to have him back next year.”
