Mesut Ozil’s contribution towards the end of the game against Everton has been criticised by a former Arsenal player.

The 2-1 defeat at Goodison Park has seen Arsene Wenger’s side face more scrutiny than usual after conceding twice from headed goals.

Seamus Coleman was handed a free header for Ronald Koeman’s side’s first goal before Ashley Williams pulled off the same trick in the dying minutes of the game.

According to Paul Merson, who once represented Arsenal, Mesut Ozil’s attempt to defend Everton’s second goal was not good enough.

“He [Ozil] was cowering as the ball came in and he literally ran away from it.” Merson said

“That’s not good enough. That doesn’t win you league titles. He doesn’t even need to win it. Just a little nudge could have been enough to put Ashley Williams off but he gave up.

“Arsenal can’t afford to do that.”
