Manager’s reaction to Chelsea defeat
So after the deja vu at Stamford Bridge (Drogba the killer in a fruitless Arsenal domination) which hardly needed a match report, here was the Arsenal manger’s immediate words.
“I don’t want to compare [the two teams] too much. I just think we have made a demonstration that you can play well and lose the game. The game should be over before we started it – we had the first two chances in the first minute and I don’t know how we managed to miss the header from six yards. At that level you can get punished.
“I think we were a bit unfortunate as well because the first goal was a foul on Song from Ramieres – 100 per cent foul. After that we made a mistake that should not happen at the near post and Drogba took advantage of it.’
“After the second half it was one-way traffic and in the last ten to 15 minutes Chelsea were counter attacking. But we missed too many chances at that level and in the final third you need to be more clinical offensively and defensively. We had a great team performance and great energy.
“You could see that Chelsea finished with cramps because they had to run a lot, so I give credit to my team. But we have to be more clinical to win championships – we can’t lose a game like that.”

hey randy, i think fabianski had a very gud game what do you think
Hey mate, you took the words out of my mouth.
I watched the match elsewhere and I have been praising Fabianski all the way home. He was simply superb and if it was not him, we would have lost 4-0 at least.
It was miraculous. Fabianski of all people.
Arsene Wenger has been singing his praises all along, but as usual,no one believed him.Every goalkeeper i know, makes mistakes, and unfortuneately, this is how they are mostly judged.
Yup agree. He dealt against chelsea with confidence. He was decisive too and did not panick. He should be our no.1 at the moment. In fact a confident Fabianski is a good Fabianski.
why is everybody so fucking surprised ? AW IS RIGHT WITH WHAT HE SAID REGARDING THE 1ST MIN HEADER…
CHEER UP, THIS IS A KNOWN FACT OR LAW :
“Performance is inversely proportional to the result”…
When will the stubborn one strengthen the keeping department, we need a ruthless finisher upfront who frightens defenders, that takes them out of the game, we can then match other teams on ability, pace, skill and fitness
Wenger bang on, as usual.
Whatever Arsene said was right and He is not making excuses,he is just saying the truth(Not being clinical)
Our players don’t have the JUST-DO-IT mentality for various reasons.
Five years and we have won f**k all…make that six..fourth place dog fight again.
Strange I thought the point of football was to score goals and win the game not give the other side cramps, I’ve missed something yes?
Anyway, I’m happy about Fabianski’s performance, lets hope he can do an Eboue. i suppose in one way this is improvement on the absolute spanking we got there last season, but this team, five years on still lacks cutting edge and that a worry.
You’re right, but to correct one point you made, we were NOT ‘spanked’ there last season. In this fixture (back in February) we lost 2-0 after dominating JUST like today.
In fact, Chelsea have never really spanked us at SB, it’s at the Emirates which they have. 1-4 in April 2009 and 0-3 in November 2009.
They’ll come later this year in December.
In February we didn’t dominate at all, we were kept at bay and possession was totally useless. In this occasion Arsenal really could have and should have snatch something. However kudos to Chelsea they have very good team and most importantly for them people who are playing all the time together while relatively are injury free
It’s not a lose…. It’s the fatch that Arsenal lose always in the same way from six years! Six years!
The difference between this match and the last year’s? Nothing. The same errors.
This is a bad mantality. And this is Wenger’s fault.
Six years are enough. It’s time to change.
This manager has nothing to give to this team.
True. Chamakh is not a deadly striker by foot at all. It’s only in the air that he does the job.
In fact, when he gets a one-on-one chance, he is usually keen to create a penalty kick (which he won’t even take himself) or pass the ball than go for goal.
Even Bendtner shoots more.
I bet my house that Chamakh (or every else on the pitch) would have passed the ball if a chance like this fell today
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMo6ks5djX8
Why didn’t Adebayor celebrate w/ him lol coz RVP broke the law by not passing to him lol.
The truth is that it is Wengers fault we are always not clinical against the big teams, does anybody think that Chamakh is clinical?the only thing he looks clinical with is diving………..
so buy clinical players you morron!!
Our forwards are fine, it was chelsea’s defense after all. Chamakh did miss a clear header and it would have put us level at the time. Oh well..
1 word for u wenger. . .CUNT!!!
We played well but two costly mistakes on closing down our opponents and we lost the game. But I am still very uncomfortable with Songs new role in the team. It has left me confused. I lost count on how many times my new favourite player Jack was the last line in the midfield to the defenders. I think we are lossing the good formation we had last year and early this season. I might be wrong but this I feel is the reason we are conceding goals the way we are doing. Song needs to stick to what he knows best and utilise his abilities and technique to the fullest. I am tempted to suggest we drop him and play Denilson for sometime.
Wenger is 100% right on what he said, if we dared to finish our chances, it could’ve been a different game, but we didn’t and that’s for a reason. The reason is, we had no leadership and even if Cesc was there, it probably could’ve been the same, but if RVP was there, I think it would’ve made a difference. His temperment is something we need in the team, we have too many complacent characters, well we can’t blame Koscielny, 14 months ago he probably was playing in Ligue2 (or 3 dunno), and all of the sudden he’s about to score on Chelsea lol. Also I’m afraid some of our players look at games from the neutral fan perspective where if chances come quick, they don’t take them coz simply it would all become too easy, what I’m getting at there is that the hype of theses games damage our chances especially when it comes to newcomers (they get too excited).
Most teams lost away against Chelsesa…. at least after they started to buy titles.
I have loved the Arsenal for far more years than I care to remember but, I am so sick of groundhog day. What hurts most is try as I might I could not see any other result.
There’s only one reason that Arsenal lost today…The man that is Drogba.
True true. Imagine what would have happened if he played for us?
@ Randy, I accept, lets hope we don’t get spanked at the Emirates, … I’ll start all my rituals, dances and inhaling asap.
Secondly I think Wengers approach these 5 years has been wrong, this all out attack mentality doesn’t work all the time.. hell it does’nt even work on manager all the time, until we get back to the counter attacking football that made us so good, I fear we may not win anything
Did anybody else see our defence laughing and joking with drogba at the end
Why laugh and joke when you missed you’re teams best chance and should have done better with first goal? That’s sick if I was Wenger I would fine him a weeks wages and warn him for his future conduct, this shows to me that this team don’t care and have not got the winning mentality would Adams have done this?
“Did anybody else see our defence laughing and joking with drogba at the end” – Are they robots, what are they supposed to do,cry and look angry to appease you?
“That’s sick if I was Wenger I would fine him a weeks wages and warn him for his future conduct” – How old are you actually? or are you one of these guys that think that speaking and laughing to drogba is like talking to osama bin laden?
You are childish and i do understand that they have to have some type of emotion to at least better what they did however “laughing and joking” with drogba wont do much difference and they are after all humans not some fucking emotionless object.
You wierd set of arsenal fans play too much football manager or are either kids, actually you would be kids saying things like that.
Wenger is a moron more bent on performance than wins. Same old song & dance. As long as he is charge, Arsenal will never won again. Too many diving, wimpy, players.
Hey Arsene, it is not a coincience we keep losing to Chelsea.
If we had our best players out on the pitch we would have won today. If u see that we had rvp, cesc, vermaelen, Ramsey etc out through injury, what do u think would have been the result if all these equivalent players were out for Chelsea too. If u look at their bench today they have a weak squad in all and just been fortunate with injuries. Imagine if drogba was injured today? And if rvp was playing? Fair enough lampard was injured but he was about their only one injured.
For me I was very proud of the team today they all worked hard and closed down very well. Even though we ended up with no points I think that mr wenger has proved himself to be a tactical and some what unlucky genius .
Without the plague of injuries things would have been different.
One more point, the commentator was saying during the match that drogba nearly signed for arsenal when he was a young lad playing in Africa. Do you think we would have won more in the last few years if we had him in our ranks? Do u think that Chelsea would have won anything if he wasn’t in Thier ranks ? We are only one special player like drogba away from being champions. What do u think?
Same old Arsenal, same old result, same old wenger. Another year of nothing most likely. Is this really good enough ?
Yes I think it is, we are lucky with the arsenal we get to watch.
And how on earth does spot on observations constitute excuses?
It becomes an excuse when you paint yourself to be better than the side that has just beaten us convincingly. When others do not see the so called dominance. When it tastes a little like sour grapes. When independent observers see the complete opposite of what the manager saw. Do you want me to go on?
Our Defence failed us today…our team is weak…this is about getting all 3 points and not about a pretty loss!!!! Wenger must spend!!!
I completely agree.
A hate the mediocrity of this club!!. . .gud performance my foot. .we are lucky to get spanked 2. . .remuv any hopes of winning anything. . .after all,we are nextseason fc
This lack of the clinical edge has been here since 2005. Five years is along time for any manager to remedy things. I’m afraid Wenger has lost the plot as far as winning matches is concerned. We know Chelsea and some teams are deadly at counter attack .Why can’ t Wenger play them at their own game and hit on counter.
You look at some teams who are all out to stifle the other team. The Fm is too proud to play this type of game. His all out attacking philosophy involving all the players is going to cost Arsenal dearly. It has cost Arsenal and will continue to haunt the gunners.
We need a David Villa kind of striker a kind that can pass the ball and is clinical in front of the goal!, perhaps Luis Suarez?
That was a good match.fabianski was great again… Keep up fabianski… (In Arsene We Trust).
r u for real mate we lost 2 0 in what way is that a good game are you even a gooner?
cthe squad lacks depth.we dont shot without RVP we cant play a killer pass without cesc and tommy v is our only descent center back. 70 percent posession and we had like 2 shots on goal all game.
why dont all you nay sayers p off you lot know nothing about football we lost today cause we cant finish our chances for shit and no other reason. watch the game again we were the better team even without 2 of the best players in the world in our squad take drogba out of chelsea and their shit simple as he scores all the goals creates all the the space and chances chelsea are a one man team wenger said nothing but the truth and i didnt see any excuses in what he said and who do you suggest we buy. unless drogba swaps sides or RVP finally stops getting stupid injuries we will always struggle against these teams because you cant be a champion when your championship players are contently injured
arsenal is unlucky team from all the priemer leage team
Wilshere and Fabianski were cool,
Arshavin however disapointed me egain
all our big players injured. so difficult to win against chelsea.
charmak is not the type of finisher arsenal need to win trophies. Somebody who is lazy, cannot run, no strength, no skills, he is not a threat to other defenders and can’t score with leg apart from his head. What type of a useless striker is that? Lol
i hope my arsenal win next game
ARsenal desperatley needs a striker like Drogba, Rooney, Schevchenko – Van Percy is just not the option any more because of injuries. Somebody simple enough to just finish the beautifull combinations created by Arshavin, Fabregas, Rosicky, Rmsey or Wilshere… Chamack is good but he is not finisher.
Once again almost predictable. Lots of poss and nobody can score. Obviously that French team din,t let Chamach go because he was genius – he is slow waits for the ball to come to him then apart from heading he doesn,t know what to do!! Give Bentdner anotherchance please – at least he puts in great work rate and so and so on this year it seems is a replay…god Help us.
hey randy can u chek out my blog lol i need ut help
Champagne Dreams on a Beer Budget, Sausages and Caviar, Mediocre Jokers ….. must I go on ???
what type of arsenal fans are u all? now u all think chamakh is not good enough,he was disappointing but he was tightly marked lets see you go play against Chelsea and score. actually why don’t you go support Chelsea to!
Its like the going to the same horror movie and expecting a different ending !!!! More of the same …. all the way down to the managers post game!
Cannot reconcile the title of the article with the quotes. Poor effort, Randy
Arsene Wenger’s observations on the performance of the team are spot on and are not excuses.Like him,i am proud of the team, despite the loss, and will continue to give them my full support. The season is still quite young and i am confident that with their continuing improvement and the return of our injured players,we still have a good chance of winning the league this season.Up ye mighty GUNNERS.
How can you blame Wenger? Is he on the pitch?
The difference between Arsenal and Chelsea today was a man called Drogba.
Only he could of scored that goal today. The free kick Alex took was immense and happens once in a blue moon.
Heads up and lets get ready for the next game.
well now the league has gone we can put all our efferts into the carling cup
spot on arsene our boys gave 100%
I think for those of you who are taking into account the injury list for yesterdays game need to wise up….IF we had a full squad we would definately push chelsea hard, BUT when was the last time arsenal had a full squad of players to choose from?!
There is something fundimentally wrong with the arsenal medical set up/training regime…injuries that should require two weeks rest are taking at least double the time, I.e. Vermo, we’re told two weeks yet it’s five now with no indication as to when he will return! All this and we’re only 7 games into the season, what can be changed? Views??
This is the typical Arsene Wenger (AW) crap that we have heard over a trophy-less half of–a-decade now!!Enough has been said about the defficieny of grit, class, experience and precision regarding this current gunners’ squad. The team is not really bad but also not good enough! To appreciate the fans’ concerns, AW should pull out a typical starting 11 from the “invincilbles” squad of 2004 and compare it man-for-man with current Arsenal team. How could we miss out on a classy player like Rafael Van Der Vaat at cut price?! I am sick and tired of Mr. Profit Man (AW)!!
Wenger is out of ideas.
