Reason why Carlos Vela has not impressed
Trust me, Carlos Vela is one talented footballer.
But most of you may not agree because you have witnessed very little of him. And that is not your fault.
It is very difficult to accurately judge a player whom you rarely catch in action, and the fact that Vela has only ever made just TWO Premier League starts in his career is alarming.
Even in those two league starts, Vela managed a goal-scoring percentage of 50% – scoring in his first ever start at Portsmouth in May 2009 and firing a blank in his second bow at Blackburn last season.
As of May 2010, Vela has scored 8 goals in 16 starts during his two years as an Arsenal player. That is another impressive 50% scoring ratio. Also, in five appearances in the Carling Cup – where he enjoys most action – Vela has netted five goals.
I personally feel the youngster has always been something special waiting to break out of its shell, and like all spectators of the Mexican national team will attest, he is one player who will shine anywhere, at any club.
That said, you can sell or loan him to Fulham today, and if he does play football every Saturday over there, you will end up wanting him back in a heartbeat.
This insightful post is been written in the wake of Eduardo’s exit and Vela’s change of squad number. For once, hopefully next campaign, Carlos may get his opportunity.
In fact, I cannot think of any other player in the squad who is deprived of playing time more than this guy. His duties with Mexico are not helping at all and for whatever reason, even when he IS available, Wenger enjoys playing him only when there is just a handful of minutes left on the clock in matches.
That is quite unfair, and therefore, Vela’s case is NOT a lack of ability (like some frustrated critics think) but a lack of chances.
Ntoice how you sometimes get sick of the sight of some players’ names in the line-up because you just cannot figure out what Wenger sees in them? Flamini in 2007/08 (until he later emerged out of Gilberto’s shadows), Alex Song in the past, perhaps Diaby and even Bendtner all spring to mind.
They all fall in the category of players whose contributions you may never have realized had Wenger not been so stubborn with his faith in them. Sometimes, the boss plays these guys so much that you jokingly call them his ‘boyfriends’.
Just imagine if he did the same with Vela.
Carlos has never gotten even three straight starts during his time at Arsenal, and as much as we may note his flaws if he was to play week in, week out, we may also learn his qualities.
The 21-year-old’s contributions at Arsenal are normally assessed only during cameos – when we expect him to do wonders as we chase a game with only a few minutes left.
And don’t even dare to argue that Vela got is chances when Van Persie went down last season because it was in fact, Edurado, who benefited in playing time. Vela’s only starts upfront during Van Persie’s long lay-off came in cup competitions. Wenger simply went with Arshavin/Eduardo upfront during that spell and Vela remained down the pecking order.
Again, his international responsibilities has played a big role in this, especially the way he often comes back with niggling injuries, but there are times when he has been available for selection and was overlooked.
So my point here is; only judge Carlos when you get to see him almost every week like you do with Bendtner, Denilson and company.
when a player doesn’t get a chance very often it means he doesn’t deserve it. But I hope the guy gets more agressive and does well in this new campaign
Not always though. Did flamini not prove that he deserved more starts once he got into the 1st team?
And do you really think theo deserves all the chances hes had despite proving over and over that hes just not ready?
I really agree with the article that lack of opportunities has really hindered vela, but I also think the change of formation has not been so kind to carlos, who always looks better as the main striker. Hes definitely a skillful player, but he doesnt always get involved in the build up enough. Hes more the sort of player who you want to release high up the pitch, to get him behind the defence. Nonetheless I think he can become a very effective winger if given chances. Hes got all the technical ability you could hope for in a player, he just needs the opportunities to learn the position, as he is doing with mexico anyway, and to get used to his teammates.
Interesting article Randy.
Btw, Vela is 21, not 20.
Cheers, mate. I also liked your piece about Vela too. 🙂
Vela is a flop
He has shown zero promise and zero skill
and for a forward he is so slow it is embarassing
I think he was timed the 2nd quickest player at the club. Theo is quickest, then its either him or traore. Did you not see the carling cup goals he scored and assisted on last season, where he would look 2nd favourite, but still beat the defender to the ball before making a goal? It happened on a few occasions.
And to say he has zero skill is just odd.
Your lack of knowledge/observational skill is embarrassing.
You’ve got no idea buddy.
You obviously aren’t watching closely if you think he’s slow. Given his chance, he will do wonders!
Vela is a very talented striker but I’m yet to be convinced that he has the physical attributes required for success at PL level. For me he tends to be too easily brushed aside, still only time will tell.
Hes a lot stronger than theo, but with his extra match experience, walcott has learnt to drop into space and give himself a positional advantage, so he is rarely exposed for being weak. You could say the same about more experienced players like rosicky and nasri, who also arent particularly strong but are rarely exposed.
Vela does have a bit to learn, but strength is not the thing that’s holding him back. Id say hes actually a lot stronger than the players I mentioned. Its experience and coaching he needs, to find the space before he can be pushed around by bigger players.
Id also say that if vela had been given anything like the opportunities theo has had, he would be a far better player by now because his technical ability is several levels above imo. His 1st touch and close control are just superb and his crossing and finishing skills are far above walcott.
Walcott is a bit quicker, especially over short distances, which is extremely important, but the main thing he has over vela is that hes a bit more used to playing out wide, and is a bit better at finding space to pick up the ball now – but that’s all hes really learnt in 3 or 4 years of 1st team football!
I love how you pick our two worst players in Bendtner and Denilson to compare him to. He’s not tough enough for the English game, he goes to the ground expecting the whistle to go and when it doesn’t he has a bit of a fit… I’m not saying he can’t be great but he needs to stand up and be counted for.
cdnt agree with u more dude cz i think vela jst needs more match action n we’ll c the best of him, stay strong ol gooners cesc aint going no were
……….oscar ………
frm kampla Uganda
i agree, Vella has skills but needs playing time. He usually lags like Berbatov but expresses the same skill like the Bulgarian. He needs this chance now that Eduardo”The Silver Bullet” is gone. Wenger totusiba Kiwaani kya Bobby. Reach me on facebook: solomon kenneth bell.
“Vela is a flop
He has shown zero promise and zero skill
and for a forward he is so slow it is embarassing”
That’s ridiculous, it was recorded recently that Vela is the second fastest player at the club behind Theo Walcott. His acceleration is phenomenal. Zero promise or skill? Have you seen any of his goals? All his goals have a huge touch of class and skill about them.
I think all fans will agree that Denilson isn’t arsenal material because he has been given so many chances by Wenger, and he disappoints most of the time. However, the same can not be said about Vela, because he hasn’t been given enough chances to prove himself.
So the answer to the question that whether Vela is good enough for Arsrnal is: I don’t know yet, because I haven’t seen him play a lot.
This is one of the many questions surrounding our squad this season. I personally think he’s hampered by the fact he isn’t a lone striker, yet there is so much competition for places on the left wing. Hopefully he’ll shine this season.
Vela is totally overrated, to peripheral,to be a high level player.Walcott has been shocking so far, he has no football I.Q.
He has the ability, no doubt. I’ll always remember a match he played for Osasuna (?) against Real Madrid and he absolutely ripped Sergio Ramos a new one. The he sewed it up and ripped it again.
What he needs is a run of games. How does anyone expect him to show what he’s capable of when he plays 90 minutes in the Carling Cup and is then reduced to 5 minute cameos when we’re comfortably winning, or being thrown on when we’re chasing a game? To me, he’s more deserving of a wide spot than more central players like Nasri and Rosicky. I do think this is a make-or-break year for Vela though. If he doesn’t breakthrough this season, he’ll be on his way.
Good points, I dont think he is mentally tough enough to get to the next level. Watch his demeanor when he plays,he does not show enough perssistants.
If wilshere can pray that cesc leaves so that he gets 2 replace him why not c.vela?..let him prove his worth..othawise we cant judge him without playing him or can we?
Light years ahead of walcott, at least in my books he is!
the lad just needs to show some incentive during training or when he’s handed a chance..
I dont think hes as effective as walcott currently, but with a run of matches he could be easily. *Potentially* he is light years ahead of walcott, I think.
The big question is should a club like Arsenal, a club which WILL deal with injuries rely on a striker like Carlos Vela or get the finished product in and let him grow with substitutions. We are not Stoke, even though our manager spends like it is.
vela is a very good young player how played very well in the world cup until he got injured. and given the playing time. he will be very good for arsenal
Vela is a technically gifted player, but also a lightweight,so he cannot reasonably expect more playing time in such a pyhsical league as the EPL.He would do well in La Liga as he proved when he was loaned out.Until he “strengthens-up”,he will have to be contented with coming off the bench.
Unlike walcott, rosicky, pires, overmars, even ashley cole!? are these players not “lightweight”? Its not all about physical strength, its about being intelligent and finding the space, not giving your opponent the chance to shove you off the ball – vela needs game-time to learn this skill! Even theo managed it to a decent degree!
Not that hes lightweight, but incidentally this is the only skill that rooney is really excellent at – and look how bloody effective it makes him! Almost all his goals last season were one-touch – because he was so good at finding the space!
thoe or vela
the reason he hasn’t impressed is because he’s shit
Suarez will score many more goals than any of our strikers, and we can afford him
Yes suarez does look like the next forlan in that hes a great all-round footballer as well as an amazing finisher. I hope he goes to spain or italy if not to us. I cant stand his cheating though (the diving, not the handball)
vela look very2 talented player..
now its time to wenger give him MORE playing time.
i hope we can see deadly partnership between him & chamakh
He’s too injury prone.
Vela is technically gifted, precise nd skillful than walcot diaby nd denilson still wondering what he has done to wenger not to hv playin tym,his loan spell was fantastic, watch him rip real madrid apart especially sergio ramos at just 18.Give him tym and he will prove his worth.
Vela is best deployed in tandem with a stronger partner as he is very cool in front of goal, just recall how many easy chip overs he successfully delivered last couple of seasons compared to a lot of nervous direct goalie body shots by other players. To better deploy him would see better conversions in the box,so may this opportunity be realised sooner this season. To stretch and cover positions not optimum had been the results of injuries and experiments, surely this season should be different given the extra cash and time to deliver is there NOW.
Theo or Carlos, no doubt Carlos. He has more raw talent and skill than Wanker walcott or the likes of diaby.eboue, traore, bentnail etc . To judge him on 2 starts in the EPL is stupid. Look at his performance in the WC, England could have done with him ! One eyed wenger needs to give him a decent chance to prove himself or he too will follow other prime talent out the door(ie. merida)If he gave all the players the same chance that he gives to his french players like diabolical etc.

Wenger gives too many chances to theo and denilson, but the others are deserving.
Vela is very skillful, but I wouldnt say hes more so particularly than diaby, traore, who are both extremely talented, skillful players but, like vela, still have to improve other sides to their game in order to maximise their potential. Diaby could well make that final step up this year. I think he will be an important player for us.
Eboue is different. Hes already extremely effective. One of the worlds’ top attacking fullbacks really, and a very good winger. Better than theo. If manu could finish chances I dont think anyone would have a problem with him playing right wing for us.
Bendtner isnt as skillful, but the other sides to his game are decent. Not the finished article, but a pretty effective player still. If you look back at the goals eduardo scored before his injury, a number of them were set up be very good passes from bendtner, for example.
i think vela is a very good player
he played really well on the right.
the squad should be
new keeper
sagna new defender vermalan clichy
new DM song
fab
vela arshavin
van
sub ; bend, chamakh, eboue, gibbs, djorou, lorent kon, nasri.
theo, rosicky, diaby, whilshre, ramsey,
cambell, traore, novverdent, denilsion.
3 keepers
That’s the thing we have very good young players that need a run. There is nothing like playing week in week out for your fitness, development, confidence and touch in any sport. I’m not saying all of them will be able to make the step up. May be we should loan a few out?
First off, let me say that I like Vela and think we will be an exceptional talent someday (and probably soon) my only doubts would be around he complete dependence on his left – 95% of prem league defenders will know how to play him, so until he learns to play with his right I have my doubts about what impact he can make, especially this season.
You also have to ask the question if Wenger rates him so highly why does he play Walcott, Eboue and Eduardo (the latter 2 ridiculously out of position).
I’d imagine if Vela had a decent WC with MExico and a few offers came in he would have been out the door (as he said himself pre WC)
People need to understand that Denilson doesn’t play as a Defensive Midfielder. When Arsenal are playing their 4-3-3 formation, it is usually Fabregas & Diaby as the Central Midfielders & Song as the Defensive Midfielder. When Song is replaced by Denilson, Arsenal play 3 Central Midfielders. Don’t assume because Denilson is playing instead of Song, he plays in the exact same position!
On Carlos Vela, please dont say that “he is slow and has no skill” because if you compare him with most of the attackers in the final third of the pitch, after Van Persie, Nasri & Arshavin he may be the next best with skills. And about him being slow? well without Walcott, Clichy & A. Traore, who’d you back on winning a 100m sprint in the Arsenal team? About his phisical strength, he won’t really need that as long as he can develop his football. Messi, everybody’s best player in the world isn’t exactly a tank is he? Van Persie, Arshavin, Nasri arent exactly tanks as well either but they’re still one of the best on the planet.
No.Messi isn’t a tank, but he doesn’t play in a physical league like the EPL.As i pointed out before,Vela did quite well when he was loaned out in La Liga.I am sure Messi would experience similar difficulties should he play in the EPL.I am not proposing that Vela should be Mr.Universe, but that he could do with a little bit more strength in order to cope with the physical demands of the EPL.The other players you mentioned,Van Persie,Arshavin,Nasri are not “tanks” as you put it,but at least they have enough strength and guts to deal with the physicality.Vela does not have that, and until he does, he will not be successful in the EPL.
Carlos Vela is still useful to The Arsenal.
Sorry this a negative one!! I am sick of the same old chatter from the Boss and the same old 3rd place names. vela , theo and crowd… Have we really strengthen the team with two French “unknows”same the same old stuff for the coming season ” all promise and no real end result’Are we going to hang Wiltshere and the other young guys out to dry – we hve spent a lot time and money on these young guys only to loan them out again. I am tempted to support Crewe Alex. forgive me give perhaps I am tiredthis am
I am a bit off topic but I am again incenced at yet another Barca player airing his views on the Cesc deal.(Villa) I wonder if this is a physco ploy by the Barca Admin to put their players up to this (Just wonder?) Agian if he is going next year, he will not be able to give us 100per cent for a varity of reasons this year – get the good mony and let him go. this whole affair must also have an unsettleing effect on our present players. Isn,t it possible for FIFA to stop this physco TAPPING? Any body with ideas????
Excellent article. I had written him off myself and now feel ashamed when I realise how little he has played.
please loan him out to Fullham that way he can get some play time with fellow international teamate Carlos Salcido. Maybe then Mexico won’t be a crap team for 2014.
