Report: Arsenal 1-0 AS Roma
By Randy Osae
A normally elusive penalty kick – converted by Van Persie – was the difference as Arsenal edged out Roma in a compelling round-of-16 first leg.
Wenger’s men will take a mere lead into the return leg in Rome knowing this is no job done, but it is advantage Arsenal nonetheless.
The eminence could have been more, some chances were spurned, but unlike last year, Arsenal will not have to rue an Adebayor header which struck the bar nor a blatant penalty kick unrewarded.
For a misfiring side, Arsenal came out and questioned first in this clash. The hosts were very much on the front foot from the start, and stayed there.
Initially, Samir Nasri was fed through on the right. He pulled the ball back to Bendtner on the edge of the penalty area, but the unmarked Dane hesitated with his first touch and eventually saw a poised effort blocked. Nasri then headed faintly onto Clichy’s pin-point cross later on, but the ball traveled just wide.
Roma would always be absorptive and strive to unleash sucker punches. And Marco Motta undermined that when he fiercely stroke from 25 yards out – with the ball heading towards the goal’s top corner – but Almunia impressively met it with his finger tips.
The visitors had been chasing shadows though, and neither would they legitimately stop Van Persie’s surge into the box as Mexes tripped the Dutchman soon after half an hour turned .
Gifted but richly-deserved, Arsenal had the upper-hand from an unlikely source as Van Persie swerved his spot-kick past Roma’s goalkeeper.
They had gained some leeway, and the goal scorer nearly set-up a second for Bendtner who could not find his feet after receiving Van Perie’s cut-back pass in a crowded 18-yard box. The Gunners greeted some boon though, moments before the break. De Rossi’s yellow card for an indecent tackle on Nasri, suspends him for the second leg in Rome.
The visitors materialized attack more after the restart but it was Arsenal who were close to execution when Bendtner horribly scuffed the ball into the stands after Van Persie’s attempt for a shot had been pushed to the free Dane.
Diaby then unleashed a thunderous effort which tested Doni. That was his last act of the match as the Frenchman went off for Song on the hour mark.
Suddenly Arsenal looked to butcher a frail Roma defense with Eboue latching onto a mistaken back pass, but the Ivorian never really looked odds on to provide that slayer – stalling the ball for defenders to rush back, and eventually hitting the side-netting.
Arsenal had been very lenient with Roma, and Wenger inquired a different scene by taking off Bendtner for Vela. But the visitors just missed out on haunting the Gunners through Riise, who smashed literally centimeters wide off Almunia’s left-hand post.
Anxiety was budding at this point as Roma gambled for a wicked equalizer. But Wenger’s men did not let slip the spoils, and in a fortnight’s time, will have to do the clinching at Stadio Olimpico.
All hail Denilson! what a player, didnt put a foot wrong all night.
plus points: Denilson, Almunia and the defence
negatives: Bendtner and Eboue (shock)
I think we’ll progress 1-1 in the 2nd leg
How can u say eboue was a shock. Well he was actually as apart from his finishing n decision making this was his best game. Noone can say these players ain’t good enough as almost everyone played well today. All those wanting denilson head he wasn’t bad today was he n diaby?
just what has eboue got to do for you lot , he had a blinder today, covered every inch of the pitch,100% effort for the team , denilson was also superb ,well done lads , proud of you
Arsenal should invent a new position for Eboue: team clown.
Bendtner is consistent at missing good chances and when Diaby was substituted, the team folded.
The second half was a complete farce. So is Arsenal this season.
Arsenal is short of choices with regards to forwards due to injuries to Eduardo, Ade,Walcott while Arshavin is cup-tied.Otherwise we won’t see Bendtner playing. After the 0-0 draw with Sunderland, the concern is we are still struggling to score in open play. Thank God for the penalty. If not, it will be another goalless draw.
Should have been 3 or 4 to Arsenal. Bendnter is horrible. I’ll play for Arsenal for half the wages, no club transfer fee, score double the goals with a quarter of the fitness
Denilson was marvellous tonight! his workrate and willingness to put a foot in reminded me of flamini. We need perfomances like this in every game. Eboue surprised me, he was quite good also but he should have buried that one! Diaby made the difference in midfield, Song just isnt good enough. i think he doesnt know how to pass the ball in a forward direction! Bendtner has had his chances time for vela to be given a start. The score line hugely flattered roma though.
whats was wrong with eboues preformance i thought he was great even if he missed an easy oppurtunity
Eboue had a great game, Diaby great game. The way the were attacking the d was amazing. Can’t wait to see more of it.
I can’t get down on anyone, I truly love Bendtners heart and passion but his touch is just horrible. The boys looked great, the back four amazing. Gallas what a player, he was amazing today.
Should be a great game in Rome when we get Theo, Edudardo, and Ady back. Get a big win in Rome and then we get Cesc back to make the push.
Good game Arsenal, now lets take it to Saturday.
What a bore……… more of the same, can’t score even against an ordinary italian side devoid of any depth of idea! As always Bendtner fails to perform, Diaby does bugger all except get the ball caught under his feet, Eboue made to look ok because they allowed him the space to run as they knew nothing to worry about could ever come from him, Denilson was his usual self nothing special very average, Song was his usual self when he came on slowing the pace of the game down to a crawl because thats the way he thinks and that killed our biggest threat to Roma – they like other italian sides don’t like the pace that english sides play at. Europe suits this Arsenal side best as they are allowed more time on the ball and are not pressurised as they are in the EPL we stand a chance if we don’t play another EPL side or Barcelona. This is still an average side – a pale imitation of the Arsenal sides of the previous ones under Wenger!!!!
Denilson was awesome. Everywhere, won all his tackles played the simple passes. You gotta the love the kid for his heart and desire!
Someone said he was as good as Flamini tonihgt, I agree. The best thing about that comment is that it took Flamini to the age of 24 or 25 to put in a performance like that. This kid is special!
Yeah, Eboue was probably the best player out there tonight, so to say he was a negative is a bit naive on your part. You focus on the scoring opportunity, but there are 90 minutes to a game, and whenever Arsenal was moving forward it was Eboue with the ball and a head of steam. He looked like he hit another gear tonight.
I don’t understand why some still commently badly when Eboue played well. Diaby looked to have given that extra dimension in the middle of the park. Denilson was excellent. Only one who looked out of sorts-Bendtner. I don’t blame Eboue for missing because he’s not a striker yet he kept his composure well in front of goal and even had better first touch than Bendtner. I wish Eduardo had been playing.
