Mesut Ozil scored his first goal in Arsenal colours before Olivier Giroud added another strike ahead of half-time as the Gunners sailed through a 2-0 victory over Napoli on Tuesday.

The match had lasted only eight minutes when Aaron Ramsey got in behind the Napoli defence and showed great awareness to pull the ball back to the edge of the area. And there was Ozil who did not even take a second to think and just side-footed a sublime shot past Reina.

The hosts continued to impose themselves on Rafa Benitez’s men and it was Olivier Giroud’s turn to get on the score-sheet just seven minutes after the opener. Napoli gave the ball away under pressure in their own half and Mesut Ozil raced to the byline and picked out Giroud in the six-yard box for a trademark finish from the Frenchman.

Napoli showed a bit more guts after the break but the damage had already been done as Arsenal topped Group F in the Champions League with 6 points after two games.

Arsenal’s captain on the night Mikel Arteta said:

“Considering we were playing against a top side, we played very efficiently winning the ball back and it was a very impressive first 45 minutes.

“We have the talent up front to score the goals. But there is also a hunger. Now we know that we need to win the ball back quickly, because when we win it back in the final third we are very dangerous.

“We still have players to come back from injury and they will add their own qualities.”

Second goal scorer Olivier Giroud added:

“We had a great first 45 minutes and that meant we could play our game in the second half. Mesut Ozil is a great player it is really easy to play with him.

“We have a good relationship and understanding on the field.”

And the Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger said:

“The first half was amazing, absolutely fantastic. Everything was in there. All that you dream to see when you come to watch football.

“We were solid. Flamini and Arteta contributed to that, and overall it was positive because I wanted Flamini to be very good on the counter-attack, especially with Ramsey, and that worked very well.

[On winning the first two games] “You cannot start better, and the next two will be deciders. That’s when we want the game to come back after the international break and have a great game against Dortmund.”
