It had been a dominant performance by Wenger’s men today but their wastefulness in front of goal had to be spared by the class of Van Persie.

The Gunners terrorized Wigan’s defense from kick-off and it took 21 minutes to break the resistance of Wigan’s goalkeeper as Van Persie received Song’s through pass and whipped the ball home to put his side ahead.

An enormous amount of goal-mouth chances went begging for Arsenal afterwards as the visitors somehow remained in the game into the second-half, but an even more emphatic finish from Van Persie after being found by Fabregas handed Wenger’s men their much-deserved second goal in the 58th minute.

And after missing a golden chance to score his first ever hat-trick for Arsenal from a penalty kick opportunity which saw Wigan go down to ten men, Van Persie slammed home his and Arsenal’s third from a nearly impossible angle with his weaker foot to bring a comfortable day to an end.

The Gunners were hardly rampant today, but with such quality in their armoury, they did not have to be to clinch victory.
