Report: Arsenal 3-1 Burnley
One of the most profligate performances ever by Arsenal made tough work of a vital home win over Burnley.
Excessive misses in front of goal – with Bendtner the prime culprit – cost Arsenal only the scare of Nugent’s equalizer after Fabregas’ opener before goals from Theo Walcott and Andrey Arshavin spared any major embarrassment in a 3-1 victory.
The Gunners were still stinging from the bitter fall-out of Aaron Ramsey’s horror injury at Stoke last weekend and there was more support for the Wales midfielder as his teammates modeled shirts reading ‘Get Well Soon Aaron’ before kick-off.
It was also easy to presume that Arsene Wenger slightly feared a repeat of the wobble that afflicted his side two years ago after Eduardo’s injury. Arsenal failed to win their next four games following the Croatian’s injury at Birmingham – wrecking their title hopes that season.
So the visit of travel sick Burnley came at an ideal time for Wenger.
And Arsenal could have been coasting within 15 minutes, with Tomas Rosicky and Fabregas both narrowly missing the target. But they finally eased into the lead 11 minutes before half-time with Fabregas’s 14th league goal of the season.
Burnley captain Graham Alexander was completely bamboozled by Samir Nasri’s clever pass and Fabregas was presented with the easy task of slotting the ball under Brian Jensen.
It was to be Fabregas’s last contribution of the match, though, as he limped off shortly afterwards to be replaced by Abou Diaby. Nicklas Bendtner squandered two excellent chances early in the second half before Walcott lashed a powerful drive just over the bar.
But Burnley stunned the Emirates into silence five minutes in as Nugent capitalised on dithering defending from Thomas Vermaelen and Mikael Silvestre to lob the ball over Manuel Almunia.
Walcott eased home nerves, however, by firing Arsenal back into the lead just after the hour with a curling shot from just inside the box. But Arsenal’s defence hardly impressed in the latter stages and a late bombardment from the visitors nearly earned Burnley a shock equaliser.
Almunia flapped at a Chris Eagles corner and substitute Steven Thompson blasted over from a good position.
Arsenal finally made the game safe in added time when Russia international Arshavin hit the target.

Nasri n Walcott………….i vote 4 2 man of the match 2day again Burnley…….and rat of the match 2 Bentdner…..have at least a hatrick……i oso would have done better than him
Fantastic performance by Walcott. Calm head and great feet. Don’t let the bsstards get you down, Theo.
at least we scored 3! IF ARSHAVIN HADNT SCORED i would have felt really bad!hope bendtner gets his curse broken next time!
denilson must go on the summer!!!
by the way i think EBOUE IS AN UNSUNG HERO!BRILLIANT!
great win for arsenal but frustrated wiv some of the missed opprtunities but still 3 great goals and a great performance for the whole team guys dyu know if fabregas is alright he needs to make the porto game
I have to say that Arsenal played really well. Although, we won 3-1 we should’ve put this game to rest in the first half. Frustrating to see us miss chance after chance. We’ll get it right soon. MOM for me was, Nasri/Theo. Credit to TR7, as well.
Same reason why, Arsene took, Cesc off quickly…Porto game on Tuesday! I hope he is ok. We need him and we need, Bendtner to put those chances away!
Let’s go Arsenal!
Is Bendtner good enough for The Arsenal??
Bentner was too wastful 2day, he av to take dose chances against porto.
where are the Theo bashers???
i really wud like to know what happened to those people who wanted Diaby, Eboue and walcott’s head. I know its old story for Diaby n Eboue but i wud love to meet up with these people n c if they dont feel foolish not having supported the players. Gooners are pathetic sometimes.
Good performance tho. Never mind missed goals. Come on Theo show them wat u can do!
Lol Theo keeps on shooting from the right side with his right leg he’s never gonna score. Notice he scored because he used his left. Talking about no football brain. I notice he’s really afraid to kick the ball a little front, sprint towards it anD WHAM! the ball into the keepers face or something.. Always shooting before any defenders even get close. Talking bout no football brain.
Wao, this was a very important victory, especially because it was the first One after the Ramsey injury. yeah! this is also a strong mental victory
Oh ye of little faith.I’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again,we can still win this thing.Go Gunners.
