Rosicky making case over Arshavin
From his impact at Anfield, which contrasted an indifferent Arshavin, Tomas Rosicky might have a claim to make about who Wenger’s starting options in midfield should be, especially with Nasri now sidelined.
After his introduction, the Czech midfielder sent dangerous balls into Liverpool’s box for Chamakh who had been starving of that all day and perhaps that highlighted how Rosicky, along with Nasri, are the better crossers of the ball we have.
It was in that crossing fashion which Rosicky set up the equalizer after carving out Arsenal’s best effort of the game which Reina saved. Thus, if Arshavin’s cold performances remain, who is to denyArsenal’s No. 7 a starting place on the left – if his injury problems are to end of course.
Anyway, let’s just recap his vital cameo on Sunday.
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxQtuxt8D3w&w=400&h=250]Then again, has Arshavin not been taking Rosicky’s place anyway, perhaps?.
Remember, before this guy was stricken down by a niggling injury back in January 2008, which was also before Arshavin arrived, Rosicky was a first-choice player in Wenger’s line-ups and despite a struggle with fatigue, he was forced to start that FA Cup tie with Newcastle – which he limped out of – because he was so key to the team at the time.
For me, Tomas has not been given a fair assessment in his Arsenal career.
Unbelievably, last season was only Rosicky’s second full campaign as an Arsenal player. In his debut 2006/07 year, the Czech star was quite terrific in most of his appearances while netting some stunners including a double at Anfield in the FA Cup. He looked to resume those exploits in 2007/08 and was doing just that, equalling his tally of 7 goals from his first season by half-way through the camapign before it soon ended prematurely.
Rosicky then missed the entire 2008/09 term, and when he returned last season, had a fairly contributive 2009/10.
There are those still skeptic over Rosicky’s ability to gain a key player status at the club but those critics are merely judging him on last season, which was his first time of playing top-level football again in more than 12 months. Even so, the 29-year-old showed impressive work-ethic (remember the heart he showed at the Camp Nou?) when present on the pitch and his enthusiasm, occasional sumptuous tackles and ability to track back on the left was far more appreciable than that of Arshavin.
Upon all that, Rosicky netted vitals goals against Bolton and Everton while showing scarce class from Arsenal in his first appearance of the season when he came off the bench to score in the embarrassing 4-2 loss at Man. City.
I am also of the opinion that fans do not regard Rosicky’s hard-working efforts on the pitch because his style of play is not so different from his colleagues in midfield. What I’m saying is that, we have too many small, technical midfielders like him who bring the same flair to the table, so it is hard to appreciate what Rosicky provides…unless its something truly special like netting a hattrick at Old Trafford or playing Song’s DM role well.
Thus, we expect too much of Rosicky in roles which he was not made for. An example is how he was criticized for one of the goals against Legia Warsaw recently. It is not his fault that he is a pure attacking-minded player (with feeble physical presence) and has few or no capable defensive-minded teammates on the pitch to compliment his work.
This point also brings about the importance of the likes of Diaby and Song who add some touch of vigor to our midfield. Diaby, despite his heavy first-touch and appalling short passes, provides the strength and muscle you need when probing a tough opponent. What’s also not mentioned is his clinical ability in front of goal (watch his goals against Portsmouth, Birmingham, AZ Alkmaar, etc.). Lampard and Gerard are players skilled going forward but they wouldn’t be who they are if they were often bullied in midfield or could not finish like strikers.
So, for instance, if you go to dirty Stoke with a midfield of Arshavin-Fabregas-Rosicky-Nasri, don’t blame Rosicky or whoever for not being an’ Essien’ in stopping Ricardo Fuller’s run towards our back line. Instead, blame the man who chose to play absolutely no recognized defensive midfielders.
This point also relates to the much-maligned Denilson who is criticized for failure to claim a responsibility which he truly was not designed for. From his shows as a youngster at Sao Paulo, the boy was nothing close to a DM but instead a central attacking midfielder. That was very apparent in 2007/08’s Carling Cup run which saw him smash home long-range goals, set up chances for Eduardo and Bendtner and deliver set-pieces – basically playing Cesc’s role.
Wenger let Diarra, Flamini and Gilberto all leave at once and all of a sudden, every central midfielder is supposed to be Makelele at best?
No, this team is in need of another defensive midfielder!
I think you will see Walcott start against Blackpool
i wud say Tomas is one of the best MF player we have..he should play every match..the speed and quality he has, can make us Winners..
I absolutely love his style of play, I think it’s diff from Fab, and Nasri but more similar to Arshavin’s because he’s able to see those gaps in the midfield and just loves to turn and run at them. Good post, I enjoyed reading because Rosicky is my favorite player and am hoping he can get his starting spot back. He can be so deadly and take control of that midfield.
now he has Wilshire playin DM Getting tired of the same dumb shit really
Yeah, Wenger simply plays small, attacking-minded players in roles only played by hard-working ‘animals’/football thugs.
Fool, what choice does he have at the moment, go play on you xbox.
As great as this article is, it’s a big misconception that Rosicky can’t play defensively.. in fact, he’s a much better tackler than anyone in our club who hasn’t played as cdm (denilson, diaby, song.. not sure about ramsey yet).
Anyway, the video showcasing just his sliding tackles has been removed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH5UxBdIKgw) but if you watch most of his match compilations from 07/08, you’ll see a lot of tackles.
If you want to see him play as a holding midfielders making tons to tackles, watch him here playing for the czech national team. Please let me know your thoughts by replying to this post.

I definitely did not neglect the fact that he can tackle. It was part of what I meant by “his enthusiasm and ability to track back”.
He can really get dirty and for an attacking player, that’s great. But my other point is that, we should not depend on people like him who are not full-blooded DMs to do the job.
Sure, agreed… I was reacting more the the “with feeble physical ability” part.. He’s not naturally strong, but he uses his strength very intelligently.. find me one example of him giving away the ball because an opponent is stronger than him.. generally he gives it away when he’s surrounded, but he’s never overpowered.
Sorry, i forgot to write my main point.. which was that there was absolutely no reason that Rosicky couldn’t start in Wilshere’s place on Sunday.
Btw Nasri is also really great at tracking back, like he did against Roma away in the CL.. but he doesn’t come close to Rosicky at the actual tackling part.
Here’s my article about Rosicky I wrote a year or so ago.. 🙂
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/255652-tomas-rosicky-arsenals-most-complete-player
You forgot to mention mozart has an excellent tackle on him.i’ll never forget in 07-08 when we beat the chavs at the grove he was unbelievable.he had so many tackles and successfull passes and i still can’t believe we only won one nil…
There’s a reason my #1 Arsenal home kit has the 7 on the back, and it’s not Robert Pires. Rosicky is pure class, and you nailed it on the head with the comparison’s to Cesc and Nasri. The difference being people need to remember Rosicky is home on the wing moving the ball in, not from a central position, though he moves in well. Rosicky’s greatest attribute is he seems to be the one winger on the team that knows exactly when to get rid of the ball and never holds on to it too long, something the likes of Diaby, Theo, Arshavin, and Eboue could take a cue from
I would certainly play TR instead of arshavin who doesn,t seem to have any work ethic and goes missing for large portions of the game.
Spot on samp.his one touch passes are sublime to watch…who can forget his outside foot through balls!…he is also damn quick.he has a telepathic understanding with clichy, cesc and rvp.he is a great tactical option especially in big away games and i for one have my kit with mozart’s number on its back since he along with rvp is my favourite player.
My fav moment was him and Ronaldo going at it full speed he kept with him all the way and the only midfielder of ours who would.
We have quite a few players who underperformed last season, also including arshavin, walcott, clichy and diaby. All excellent on their day but struggled with form or fitness.
I see that as a positive though. As much as i hated hearing the news that nasri was out for a month, we have a lot of cover in attacking midfield so it could be a lot worse.
Rosicky (like nasri) are not effective on the wing. Roosicky is amazing as a midfielder in a 4-4-2.

I wish Wenegr would buy DM cover and stop ruining Denilsons carreer.
Denilson is a good attacking midfielder!
Ive always so highly rated Rosicky, i was really gutted when he was injured for such a long period, i class him up their with the worlds best when hes at his best he is capable of so much and he is one of my favourite players in the world. you can see by the passion he has when we scored the goal against liverpool he is a true gooner!!
R7 can be a world class player n score up to 15 goals 4rm midfield if he can have an injury free season that is……. You forgot 2 mention the classy touches n great eye for assissts the guy posses. Arshvin should stop scaring u wenger, no matter how a spoilt child he is n the cool dad you are!! Good post mate
This will no longer be a problem.
With Nasri’s month long injury, they can both play….
Just wanted to say I was shocked that the guy from Legendaire came on here and said what he said. The guy is complete dickhead and I will never go to the site ever again.
I’ve missed Rosicky so much! He’s absolute class, should play on the left MD with Arshavin behind RVP/Chamakh/Bendtner, Fab [obv] and Song in CM/DM, either Nasri/Walcott RM.
Is there anything special happening for the first home game of the season? I don’t mean the clock celebrations before kick off.
Any special events in and around the ground we should know about, time, place, etc? I plan to be down real early so I can join in on any goings on.
arshavin is so lazy its not funny, would put him on the bench at best until he earns his keep, and sadly he is not the only one.

At home against Blackpool then maybe the 1st option. Away at Black&Blueburn, I’ll take the 2nd.
Rosicky ROCK!!!
HE S SOOOO F°°°°°° GOOD HE SHOWED WHAT WE MISSED THE OTHER DAY AND SO MANY TIMES:
lONG RANGE PASSING
RYTHM IN OUR PLAY
CROSSES
BREAK THROUGH DEFENSE
HE IS AN AMAZING CREEATOR
I VOTE ROSICKY DEFINITELY
Agree with most of the above -think Ros is the most attacking (shooting) midfielde we have and needs more playingtime stil
In anoher post this a.m. was commenting on the regular injuries we seem to get. Suggesed they all get more Calcium intheir diet should also have mention everyone having a bone density scane so the medics have some idea of their strengths ?????
I am excited about seeing what a fully fit Rosicky is capable of. We think of Eduardo’s leg break as the turning point in that 2007-08 season but if Rosicky went down in January of 2008 that would have been felt as much. The midfield of Rosicky, Flamini-Cesc-Helb was the best in the EPL that year. They were on a telepathic wavelength.
He’s a footballing genius and I really hope “The Little Mozart” turns it on for all us Gooners this season.
Denilson is going to be a great DM for us this year also. Mark my words……
can someone clarify this please. i read on goal.com that wemger is signing another French defender from Seville.
Seems fairly reliable as transfer rumours go. John cross from the mirror reported it and he has close links to arsenal. Also the guardian reported it and as newspapers go they are less inclined to report transfer news with no foundation.
You mentioned “much-maligned Denilson”?? This idiot has shown no desire, hunger and spirit in his performance. A few long range shots do not convinced that he is a football player, he should retire.
Cone, your’e the idiot. AW has changed position for many players, everybody knows the story about Henry beeing a winger before Arsenal, right? Denilson is (was) a much better dm than Flamini was at the same age. AW knows what he’s doing. Only hope that Denilsons injury problem will end soon.
Rosicky has always been a good player; it’s unfortunate he was gutted by ugly injuries.
His one touch passes are nice to watch. Arsene please start him on Saturday.
Come on “Little Mozart” keep making the difference for Arsenal!
Gunners for life!
Rosicky is one of the best players we have, if not for his injury we would have been much further along.
The guy has class, heart, tenacity, and a sweet right foot.
I long for the day for him to be fully fit an reliable as in the 2007-2008 season, we would have team running scared.
I am just delighted to see rosicky showing his old form. he was starting to show it at the end of last season so i really hope he’s completely back to his old self this season. that attempt at anfield with the quick feet and shot was superb and would have been some goal if not for reina.
this is hopefully the team for saturday.

give v.persie a run out along with cesc and walcot. be good to give nordveit a game as i think he will be needed during the season.
i became a fan of rosicky after watchin euro2004. So it felt good 2 c him at arsenal 2yrs l8r.
D most entertainin arsenal midfield so far was that of rosciky, hleb, flamini & fab. Though hleb & flamini r gone, i think he can strike d same level of understanding wt nasir & arshavin along wt fab.
Wenger really need 2 return him to d first XI.
My starting line up would be:
Manone
Sagna – Nordveit/Djouro – Verm – Clichy
Song
Cesc – Rosicky
Arshavin
V.Persie
Chamakh
Great to see so many replies confirming that Rosicky is far from underrated and far from forgotten by Arsenal fans. If it hadn’t been for his injury, he’d be spoken of in the same way as Robert Pires, and you can’t get much better than that.
Rosciky is far more talented, experienced and a better character on pith than one Mr.Arshavin…
Infact he is the master of slide tackles…may be the best in premiership…
Arshavin with his attitude should definetely start on bench till he learn to exert more…
even Carlos Vela should be given more opportunity than Arshavin- the weakest link in Arsenal line-up…he could become the next Gallas with his ego…the man should learn to appreciate his team-mates efforts…
Talent will take u to the top but wont help to keep u there forever…Its hight time the pint-sized Russian learned this…
