Michael Owen has made sarcastic remarks about Arsenal’s level of success in the Premier League and Champions League over the past decade.

The Gunners have failed to make it past the last 16 stage of the Champions League since the 2009/10 season where they were knocked out by Barcelona in the quarter-finals.

Arsene Wenger’s men have also underachieved in the Premier League where they look set to settle for a place in the top four with league leaders Chelsea now 13 points clear.

And as frustration grows among the Arsenal faithful after recent defeats in the two major competitions, former Liverpool and Manchester United star Michael Owen has added his thoughts.

According to the pundit, the Gunners cannot be criticised for lacking consistency because they are in fact failing on a consistent basis.

“Arsenal are the most consistent team in the world,” Owen said on BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight show on Saturday.

“Everyone says they get to a stage and then underperform… [but] they are so consistent: they come third or fourth in the league every year, they get knocked out at the last 16 stage of the Champions League every year.

“They’re the same every year – and they have been for the last 10 or 12 years. Exactly the same. They beat all the rubbish teams in the Premier League then as soon as they go to Bayern, Manchester United or Chelsea, they get beaten. They’re a level below.”
