Standard Liege 2-3 Arsenal
Arsenal’s fashion of beginning their Champions League campaign with a bang was to produce a staggering three-goal comeback against Standard Liege.
The Gunners found themselves two down inside five minutes with Eliaquim Mangala’s low drive followed by a Milan Jovanovic penalty.
Nicklas Bendtner pulled one back on the stroke of half-time before a controversial Thomas Vermaelen equalizer after 79 minutes.
Just two minutes later Cesc Fabregas’s corner hit the knee cap of the Gunners striker and flew into the back of the net for the winner.
It completed a crazy night for Eduardo, who was only free to play following the decision by UEFA to overturn their suspension handed out after the qualifier against Celtic at Emirates Stadium last month, as he made a schoolboy error inside two minutes to gift the Belgians the lead.
I hear people say, we didn’t play well and that we were lucky. To be quite honest we were the better team out there. We made 2 mistakes and went down. We had most of the possesion and we came back and won the game. We deserved it. Good way to come back boys! Also, I was happy to see, Rosicky back. His passing skills are remarkable. We will win this group.
Thanks, for the report, Randy!
Arsenal were 3 goals better than SLiege on my scorecard- so to win by 1 goal cannot be lucky. SLiege were lucky to get 2 goals out of that performance- despite 10/10 for effort. They were simply played off the park in midfield. They are going to have to play better than that in London- or be even more fortunate.
Whether we won by playing beautifully or ugly, a win is still a win. A great start to the new campaign.
nice post randy
scraping for a win like this gives concerns me more then having a “non-deserving lost to Manu”. Arsenal was really terrible, so many mistake that went unpunished just bcoz it sub-Standard Liege. Besides, i dont think we would be happy if we conceded that hand goal. Eboue still have no idea what he is doing n Diaby is being left behind by Song n Denilson in terms of improvement.. More often than not he is just back passing. Which is the flaw to Arsenal game currently comparing to the time we had Flamini and Hleb that helped Adebayor to flourish n hence the 30 goals!
anyone else think janovic totally dove in the box on that pen?
watched that replay a few times and there seems to be no contact by gallas on him. the only possible would’ve been a foot-foot drag trip; but janovic throws his arms up like he was shot in the back at close range with a 12-gauge! what a clown.
deserved win by the gunners. just the sort of shot needed.
