Like an accomplished goalkeeper, the Pole responded when Arsenal needed him the most on Wednesday as he denied Di Natale a second goal for Udinese after the hosts were handed a spot-kick following Van Persie’s goal.

Szczesny received many plaudits as the Gunners secured a berth in the Champions League group stages, but the 21-year-old revealed his heroics in Italy might not have happened had he not performed some distraction towards Udinese’s striker before he kicked the penalty.

“I felt a little silly after the save because I gave a lot of stick to Di Natale before the kick was taken.” Szczesny said.

“I can’t say what I did. It’s something that shouldn’t be said on TV but it worked and he (Di Natale) came to me after the game and said “well done son”. I felt a little bit stupid because he’s quite a nice guy”
